CUSTOM ART FRAMER / DESIGN & PRODUCTION SPECIALIST

Mercury Framing — Boulder, Colorado $19-$25 per hour, depending on experience and demonstrated skills

ABOUT THE POSITION

Mercury Framing is a high-end custom framing studio and gallery serving artists, galleries, collectors, and the Boulder community since 1996. We are looking for a serious, reliable person who wants to learn a specialized craft and become highly skilled at it. This is a hands-on position involving original artwork, design, materials, measurements, tools, customer interaction, and problem-solving. It is not an assembly-line job where every project follows the same steps.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Work with customers to understand their artwork, preferences, budget, and goals. Help select framing designs, materials, and finishes. Accurately measure artwork and calculate dimensions. Determine appropriate materials and construction methods for each project. Build custom frames from start to finish. Handle original, valuable, and delicate artwork with care. Manage multiple projects while keeping track of details and deadlines. Recognize potential problems before they become expensive mistakes. Work closely with the owner and team when questions or judgment calls arise. Keep the studio organized, clean, and safe.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Good basic math skills and comfort working with measurements. A genuine interest in art and knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, different art materials. Good hand-eye coordination and comfort using tools. Ability to learn and understand a detailed workflow. Initiative and self-direction — you don't need to be told what to work on every time you walk through the door. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think through a question before asking someone else to solve it. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Comfortable working independently while communicating and collaborating closely with a small team. Professional and personable customer service skills. Patience, reliability, and willingness to learn a specialized craft.

A SERIOUS COMMITMENT TO LEARNING

Custom art framing is a specialized skill. It takes approximately one year of training and hands-on experience to become truly effective in this position. We are making a significant investment in training the right person, so we are looking for someone who is serious about learning the craft and interested in staying long enough to become highly proficient. You will gradually develop technical skills, learn our systems and processes, work with different artwork and materials, and take on increasing responsibility.

EXPERIENCE

Previous framing experience is helpful but is not required for the right person. Experience or knowledge in the following may be valuable: Picture framing or art fabrication Fine art, art history, or visual arts Knowledge of artwork and art materials Understanding of how different art materials behave and need to be handled Experience handling original artwork and valuable or delicate pieces Design, fabrication, or other precision crafts Upholstery, sewing, or other hands-on work requiring accuracy and attention to detail Experience working with a variety of materials and understanding how they affect a finished project

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a physically active position. You will be on your feet much of the day and need to handle framing materials and completed projects, including large or awkward pieces.

SCHEDULE

Four-day workweek is ideal for this position. Full-time preferred; part-time may be considered for the right candidate. Must be available to work Saturdays. Day shift. In-person position in Boulder.
