Position Description:
The Hite Institute of Art + Design at the University of Louisville is seeking Studio Assistants for the Glass and Ceramics studio areas. These positions support faculty, students, and the day-to-day operation of the studio facilities while contributing to a safe, organized, and engaging environment for teaching and learning.
Two positions are available:
one dedicated to the Glass area and one dedicated to the Ceramics area. Key Responsibilities Support faculty and students with studio-based instruction, demonstrations, and classroom activities. Assist with the day-to-day operation and scheduling of the assigned studio. Maintain studio facilities, equipment, tools, and workspaces. Prepare, organize, replenish, and maintain materials, supplies, and inventories. Support specialized studio processes appropriate to the assigned area. Promote studio cleanliness, organization, safety, and appropriate use of equipment. Assist students and faculty with operational, equipment, material, and scheduling needs. Perform other duties supporting the instructional and operational needs of the studio. Preferred Qualifications BFA or equivalent degree with a concentration in Glass, Ceramics, or a related studio discipline. Previous experience as a studio assistant, studio technician, or in an academic or professional studio environment. Experience working with or supervising students in a studio setting. Experience with material preparation, inventory management, equipment maintenance, and studio organization. Working knowledge of relevant materials, processes, tools, equipment, and safety practices. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills, including the ability to maintain records and inventories.
Glass Position:
Experience with hot, warm, and/or cold glassworking processes is preferred. Experience with basic equipment maintenance, welding, or woodworking is a plus.
Ceramics Position:
Experience mixing clay, glazes, and slips from scratch and familiarity with clay and glaze calculations is preferred. Experience with Microsoft Excel or comparable inventory software is a plus. We are seeking individuals who demonstrate organization, initiative, flexibility, strong communication, problem-solving skills, technical competence, reliability, and a commitment to studio safety. Successful candidates will enjoy working collaboratively with faculty and students and will be proactive in maintaining a productive studio environment.
