Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on sculptor and scenic-fabrication artist to create and finish outdoor themed environments at a park in-between El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, NM. This position will transform drawings, photographs, and design concepts into dimensional themed surfaces. Work may include carving rigid foam, applying hard coats or sculpting compounds, applying and carving cementitious vertical overlays, stamping textures with silicone molds, creating artificial rock, wood, masonry, and natural textures, and completing scenic painting and protective finishes. Primary responsibilities Sculpt architectural features, artificial rockwork, trees, ruins, characters, decorative elements, and themed surfaces from rigid foam and other substrates. Enlarge designs from sketches, photographs, scale models, digital files, or reference measurements. Cut and shape EPS/XPS foam using hot-wire tools, knives, rasps, grinders, saws, and other sculpting equipment. Apply approved foam hard coats, sculpting epoxies, putties, polymer-modified mortars, or vertical concrete-overlay systems. Hand-carve wet cementitious material and use silicone stamps, texture skins, molds, and custom tools to reproduce stone, bark, wood, brick, and other surfaces. Create molds, stamps, or texture samples when required. Blend seams, transitions, repairs, and additions into existing themed work. Apply primers, base colors, washes, glazes, dry-brushing, airbrushed effects, aging, distressing, and other scenic-painting techniques. Apply compatible UV- and weather-resistant protective coatings according to manufacturer requirements. Construct mock-ups and sample panels before beginning full-scale work. Work with management, maintenance personnel, and other trades. Maintain a clean work area and properly use respiratory protection, fall protection, ventilation, and other required PPE. Help train and direct assistants or less-experienced artists when assigned. Required experience in at least one of the following: Foam carving and sculpting Artificial rockwork or themed concrete Prop or scenic fabrication Scenic painting or faux finishing Exterior murals or architectural finishes Required qualifications: Strong understanding of form, proportion, texture, color, and realistic surface aging. Ability to reproduce a reference appearance consistently across a large installation. Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, hot-wire foam tools, spray equipment, and masonry-finishing tools. Ability to follow manufacturers' mixing ratios, pot lives, curing requirements, temperature limitations, and coating-recoat windows. Ability to work outdoors in hot weather and to perform physical work from ladders, scaffolds, or lifts after being properly trained. Ability to lift and position materials weighing up to 50lbs. Reliable transportation and authorization to work in the United States. Preferred qualifications Three or more years of professional scenic, theme-park, zoo, aquarium, museum, film, theater, exhibit, or specialty-construction experience. Experience with exterior themed environments exposed to water, pool chemicals, freeze-thaw cycles, intense UV, or guest contact. Experience with vertical stamped concrete, polymer-modified carving mortars, FRP/fiberglass, epoxy sculpting compounds, or foam hard-coating systems. Scenic-painting experience using water-based acrylics, mineral coatings, stains, glazes, and exterior clear or sacrificial protective finishes. Ability to interpret scale drawings, grids, elevations, and basic digital 3-D models.
