Mechanical Assembler Job Description This role focuses on the mechanical assembly, disassembly, and sub-assembly of wind turbine power transmissions and gear boxes. You will work from blueprints, parts lists, and assembly cards to build, repair, and modify gear units, using a variety of hand and power tools as well as overhead cranes, washers, freezers, and ovens. You will learn the complete gear box system, support both new production and service work, and may oversee lower-grade assemblers while performing other related duties as assigned. Responsibilities Perform mechanical assembly of wind turbine power transmissions and gear box sub-assemblies using blueprints, parts lists, and assembly cards. Use parts washers, freezers, ovens, cranes, and a variety of hand and power tools to complete assembly and disassembly tasks. Shim and complete final assembly of gear units to meet quality and performance specifications. Learn the structure and function of gear boxes, including pinions, torque arms, ring gears, and other key components used in assemblies and sub-assemblies. Disassemble gear boxes with housing failures, including loosening large bolts using torque wrenches or impact guns as required. Accurately locate, record, and track serial numbers for each individual part during disassembly and assembly to prevent rework and ensure traceability. Read and interpret gear box documentation, work instructions, and step-by-step assembly procedures after completing training. Operate an overhead crane safely to lift, hoist, turn, and move gear boxes throughout the facility, including positioning units for disassembly and reassembly. Perform parts washing to remove wax coatings and prepare components for sub-assembly, ensuring all parts are clean and ready for further processing. Carry out sub-assembly work by heating parts in ovens so gears can be properly warped into shape and assembled correctly. Use the overhead crane to return gear boxes to their normal position, attach exterior housings, and complete final assembly prior to testing. Complete customer-specific add-on assembly by reading instructions and mounting pumps, wires, cables, and other fixtures using impact wrenches and other appropriate tools. Work independently or collaboratively with other assemblers and provide guidance to lower-grade assemblers when needed. Follow all safety expectations and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to facility safety rules. Maintain a clean, organized work area in alignment with 5S principles and support lean operations across departments. Perform other assembly and related duties as assigned by supervision to support production, service, and repair operations. Essential Skills Minimum of 1 year of experience working as an assembler in some capacity. Proficiency using basic hand tools such as wrenches and other standard mechanical tools. Experience using basic power tools, including impact guns and similar equipment, from environments such as construction, carpentry, or auto maintenance. Ability to read and follow blueprints, parts lists, and assembly cards. Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction, with the ability to explain and understand tool sizes and names. Ability to learn and interpret technical documentation and step-by-step assembly instructions for gear boxes. Attention to detail and accuracy when recording serial numbers and completing documentation. Capability to safely operate or learn to operate overhead cranes following training. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in an assembly environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in mechanical assembly environments, particularly with gear boxes, transmissions, or similar equipment. Comfort working with large mechanical components and fasteners using torque wrenches and impact tools. Willingness to learn about gear box components such as pinions, torque arms, and ring gears. Ability to follow detailed processes for parts washing, heating, sub-assembly, and final assembly. Openness to overseeing and supporting lower-grade assemblers when needed. Work Environment The facility is modern, clean, and highly organized, operating under 5S principlessort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. It is well-lit, climate-controlled, and laid out with wide, spacious aisles and clearly defined departments, including new production, wind service (disassembly), industrial (repairs and new builds), and logistics (shipping and receiving). Work is performed using overhead cranes, ovens, washers, and a range of hand and power tools, with a maximum manual lifting requirement of approximately 30 pounds and most heavy movement handled by crane. All workers receive a company shirt and are expected to wear durable jeans or pants suitable for a clean but hands-on environment. Safety glasses and masks are required at all times on-site, in line with strict safety expectations that have contributed to years without a lost-time injury. The role is on second shift, working from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with two paid 20-minute breaks during the shift. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elgin, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.43 - $21.43/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
