Grinder / Shop Labor (Grinding Room Technician) Job Description The Grinder / Shop Labor (Grinding Room Technician) role focuses on finishing and preparing copper castings by removing flash, cutting gates, polishing surfaces, and ensuring all parts meet strict quality and safety standards. You will work hands-on with belt sanders, industrial saws, grinders, and other power tools in a busy shop environment that involves frequent material handling and adherence to safety protocols. Responsibilities Polish and sand copper castings using belt sanders to remove lashes and achieve the required surface finish. Remove flash, excess material, and rough edges from castings using grinders, sanders, and hand tools. Clean and refine casting surfaces to prepare parts for machining, coating, or final inspection. Cut gates, risers, and other casting attachments safely and accurately using industrial saws. Operate grinding wheels, belt sanders, cutoff saws, and other finishing equipment in accordance with safety guidelines. Inspect castings for defects, surface quality, and dimensional accuracy, and promptly report any issues to supervisors. Handle materials by moving, positioning, and securing castings using hoists, carts, or manual lifting as required. Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, and maintain a clean, organized grinding room work area. Essential Skills Hands-on experience using grinders, belt sanders, and other power tools in a production or shop environment. Ability to operate industrial saws and cutoff equipment safely and accurately. Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with copper castings and other metal components. Strong attention to detail when inspecting parts for surface quality, defects, and dimensional accuracy. Capability to perform material handling tasks, including moving and positioning heavy castings with hoists, carts, or manual lifting. Commitment to following safety protocols and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in a grinding room, metal finishing, or similar production environment is beneficial. Familiarity with shop practices such as maintaining a clean work area and organizing tools and equipment. Ability to work effectively on first or second shift schedules in a high-volume production setting. Willingness to learn and follow detailed work instructions and quality standards. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a shop environment with a dedicated grinding room. You will work with grinders, belt sanders, industrial saws, cutoff equipment, and other power tools while handling copper castings and related materials. Shifts are structured, with first shift typically running from early morning to mid-afternoon and second shift operating late afternoon into the night, including a longer day Monday through Thursday and a shorter shift on Friday. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Abbeville, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $14.50 - $15.50/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
