Horticultural Technician 1

Required Qualifications:

Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Associates Degree in horticulture, agronomy, forestry, or a closely related field; or two years of technical experience in horticulture, plant propagation, nursery, or greenhouse work, which includes plant pest and disease detection and control; or two years of college study in one of the above specialties and one year of experience as described. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of plant material and plant identification. 1 - 2 years experience working in a greenhouse and/or botanical gardens.

Brief Description of Duties:

Oversee and contribute in planting, prepare soil, watering, pruning, weeding, edging. Responsible for proper care and use of machinery used in horticulture. Responsible for the care, maintenance, and appearance landscapes in an assigned area. Selectively prune plants to correct defects, thin growth, restore the natural form, and remove damage. Identify abnormal plant conditions which may be caused by disease, insects, or growing conditions and apply measures to control or correct them. Uses a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment to perform plant care activities. Perform technical and manual tasks to care for and maintain indoor and tropical plants. Supervise and train work crews assigned to assist in plant care activities. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 8 Hiring Rate $40,307. This position includes location pay of $4,150 per year. Essential Position:

This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency. Seniority for promotion is the length of service in the Operational Services Bargaining Unit. Seniority applies to vacant non-competitive class positions in salary grades higher than the applicants grade. Applicants must meet the posted qualifications/job requirements, legitimate operating needs of the department and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.
