In this role, you will work directly with restaurant owners, kitchen managers, and institutional food service directors to keep their critical cooling and ice-making equipment operational. The ideal candidate enjoys fast-paced field service, has strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills, and takes pride in delivering high-quality repairs that keep commercial kitchens compliant and open for business.
Key Responsibilities Cold-Line Equipment Service:
Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on walk-in coolers/freezers, reach-in refrigerators, refrigerated prep tables, chef bases, blast chillers, and milk coolers.
Ice Machine & Beverage Systems:
Perform advanced diagnostics, sanitation, water filtration service, and repairs on commercial ice makers (nugget, cube, flaker) and draft/beverage cooling units.
Electrical & Mechanical Diagnostics:
Read equipment wiring schematics, test components (relays, contactors, fan motors, defrost heaters, thermostats), and troubleshoot solid-state micro-controllers.
Refrigeration Cycle Maintenance:
Perform leak detection, recovery, evacuation, brazing, and precise charging with standard and low-GWP refrigerants (including hydrocarbon/R-290 systems). Cross-Over Kitchen Equipment (Optional/Plus): Assist with basic electro-mechanical repairs on hot-side kitchen equipment (ovens, fryers, steamers) as needed during combined service calls.
Customer Service & Reporting:
Communicate clearly with kitchen staff regarding repair options, maintain clean job sites compliant with health codes, and log work orders electronically.
Qualifications & RequirementsRequired:
Experience:
Minimum of 2-4 years servicing commercial refrigeration in a foodservice, restaurant, or institutional kitchen environment.
Certifications:
EPA Section 608 Universal or Type II Certification.
Licensing:
Master Mechanical / HVAC-R License, Valid Driver's License with a clean record.
Technical Capabilities:
Proficiency in reading electrical schematics and ladder diagrams. Experience with small-horsepower hermetic/semi-hermetic compressors and capillary/TXV systems. Hands-on experience servicing self-contained hydrocarbon (R-290/R-600a) refrigeration units. Skill in clean oxy-acetylene brazing and nitrogen purging.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs, move heavy kitchen equipment using dolly ramps, work in cramped kitchen spaces, and tolerate hot/cold environments. Preferred /

CFESA (Commercial Food Equipment Service Association) Master Certified Technician or Refrigeration/Electrical Specialty Certification. Factory training certifications from major manufacturers (e.g., Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, True Manufacturing, Beverage-Air, Hobart, Traulsen, Perlick). Experience with soft-serve ice cream machines (e.g., Taylor) or specialized beverage systems. Basic understanding of gas or electric commercial hot-side equipment. Work Schedule Monday through Friday, standard day shift with paid overtime. Rotating weekend and evening on-call schedule for urgent kitchen breakdowns.
