Job Description

I'm looking for a hands-on, results-oriented production designer/art director for a period shoot. The date range is listed as 03/2/27 through 03/08/2, but I would need you to start planning long before those dates. The fee is outcome/project-based and would not follow a traditional 8-hour workday. Glass City Ink is a 1952 b/w film shot in a highly textured monochrome. The scene takes place in a jewelry store, and I'm looking for someone who can transform an existing storefront and approximately 150 square feet of interior space into a convincing 1952 jewelry store for camera. I need period authenticity and a set design that aligns with the essence of the scene. Because the film will be shot in black and white, I'm looking not only for period authenticity, but also for thoughtful use of texture, materials, shape, pattern, contrast, reflectivity, and visual depth so the set is interesting to photograph and detailed. I need someone with experience who can take responsibility for the following outcomes:
  • Work with the director and DP to establish the layout and overall visual design of the space.
  • Source up to four period picture cars from 1940-1952 for the exterior portions of the scene.
  • Source and dress period-appropriate jewelry display cases, jewelry displays, mirrors, signage, furnishings, and other set pieces.
  • Source and handle the small number of props called for in the script.
  • Disguise or remove modern visual elements.
  • Coordinate HMU, wardrobe, and props.
  • Arrange period-appropriate vinyl window lettering for the storefront: "Roth & Levinson Jewelers"
  • Coordinate any construction, modification, or fabrication that may be needed to dress the set.
  • Strike the set.
This is a small independent production, so I'm looking for someone practical and hands-on who can look at the location and script, determine what we actually need to put on camera, and make it happen without overbuilding the set. Period production experience and knowledge of vintage resources in Michigan, Ohio, or the surrounding region are a plus. The visual reference for the project is Ripley (2024) in terms of tone, style, and texture. The rate listed is for the designer's services and does not include production-approved expenses for props, set dressing, materials, fabrication, rentals, picture cars, or other purchases required for the production.
  • -12-page script
  • -2-day shoot
  • -1 scene
  • -Proof of concept
  • -Tentative shoot dates: March 7-8, 2027
  • -
Location:
