This position ensures that jobs are set up correctly and efficiently, production goals are met, quality standards are maintained, and employees follow all company safety procedures. The ideal candidate is an experienced machinist with strong CNC lathe setup and operating skills who can also lead a team, troubleshoot manufacturing issues, and keep production moving efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of lathe operators and setup personnel. Set up and operate CNC and/or manual lathes according to job requirements. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and job travelers. Select appropriate tooling, inserts, workholding, speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters. Set machine offsets and verify tool geometry and work coordinates. Adjust machine offsets as needed to maintain tight tolerances. Perform first-piece inspections and verify dimensions before releasing jobs to production. Use precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators, and other inspection tools. Troubleshoot machining problems, tooling issues, dimensional problems, chatter, tool wear, and machine-related issues. Ensure operators understand proper setup procedures and production requirements. Monitor production schedules and prioritize jobs to meet customer delivery requirements. Assign employees to machines and adjust staffing as production requirements change. Monitor productivity, scrap, rework, downtime, and machine utilization. Work closely with Quality Control to resolve dimensional or quality issues. Review completed setups to ensure tooling, programs, fixtures, and documentation are correct. Train and mentor operators and setup personnel on safe and efficient machining practices. Maintain accurate setup sheets, tooling information, inspection requirements, and production documentation. Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, reduce scrap, improve tooling life, and increase productivity. Ensure machines, tooling, fixtures, and work areas are properly maintained and organized. Enforce company safety policies and ensure employees use required PPE and follow safe operating procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment. Communicate production issues, staffing concerns, quality problems, and schedule changes to management. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
5+ years of machining experience, preferably with significant CNC lathe setup experience. Strong understanding of CNC lathe operations and setup procedures. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T. Strong knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, tooling, speeds, feeds, and machining practices. Proficient with precision measuring equipment. Ability to troubleshoot machining and production problems independently. Previous leadership, supervisory, or lead machinist experience preferred. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize multiple jobs and meet production deadlines. Ability to train, motivate, and hold employees accountable. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced machine-shop environment. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and move materials and tooling as required by the position. Ability to use precision measuring instruments. Ability to work around machinery, metal chips, cutting fluids, noise, and industrial equipment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment. Work Environment This position works primarily in a manufacturing/machine-shop environment and will routinely be exposed to operating machinery, metalworking fluids, noise, metal chips, tooling, and industrial equipment.
