CNC Lathe Machinist GD&T | Precision Machining Lapeer, MI $24.00 - $26.00/Hourly 2nd Shift Opportunity We are hiring a CNC Lathe Machinist to set up, program, and operate CNC lathe machining centers in a precision manufacturing environment. This role requires CNC machining experience, GD&T and blueprint reading, CNC setup and programming, precision measurement using calipers, micrometers, and bore gages, and experience performing turning, facing, boring, grooving, knurling, and threading operations on metallic workpieces.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate CNC lathe machining centers to perform boring, facing, threading, turning, grooving, knurling, thread chasing, and related machining operations on castings, forgings, and bar stock.
- Plan machining operations by reviewing work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, machining parameters, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Program CNC machines by entering instructions, zero and reference points, tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches.
- Calculate machining requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry and prove out part programs before production.
- Set up CNC equipment by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tooling, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers.
- Perform machine setup procedures, including indicating vises and tramming heads.
- Verify machine settings and part quality by measuring positions, first-run parts, and sample workpieces against applicable specifications and standards.
- Monitor drilling, cutting, grooving, turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing operations to maintain dimensional and quality requirements.
- Detect machine or process malfunctions, troubleshoot machining issues, adjust or reprogram controls, and sharpen or replace worn tooling.
- Follow established quality assurance procedures, safety requirements, security protocols, environmental policies, and PPE requirements.
- Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer instructions and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions or coordinate repairs as needed.
- Document production activities, quality results, machining irregularities, and continuing requirements to maintain continuity between shifts.
- Maintain technical knowledge through applicable training and technical publications.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 1 year of CNC machining experience.
- At least 1 year of CNC mill machining experience.
- Experience reading engineering prints and interpreting GD&T requirements.
- Basic working knowledge of precision measurement equipment, including calipers, micrometers, and bore gages.
- Ability to perform calculations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and calculate rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Ability to interpret written, verbal, and diagram-based work instructions and troubleshoot machining problems involving multiple variables.
- Ability to consistently produce work that meets established quality standards with minimal rework.
- Ability to follow applicable quality and environmental policies, safety procedures, security protocols, and PPE requirements.
- Must meet company requirements for background checks, employment verification, reference checks, and controlled substance testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-5 years of CNC mill machining experience.
- Ability to edit CNC programs manually or directly at machine controls.
- Knowledge of AS9100 and
ISO 14001
requirements.
