Job Description

About Oxbow Machine Products Oxbow Machine Products is a family-owned Tier 1 automotive tooling supplier that has been operating since 1957. We design, manufacture, assemble and install custom lift assists, secure tooling, assembly fixtures and other equipment for automotive assembly plants. Position Summary Oxbow is seeking an experienced Toolmaker/Machine Builder to assemble, fit, adjust and troubleshoot custom automotive tooling and fixtures. This position focuses on building custom lift assists, secure tools, assembly fixtures and related equipment from engineering drawings. It is not a production machine-operator position and does not primarily involve maintaining stamping dies. The ideal candidate can read mechanical drawings, inspect manufactured details, assemble purchased and fabricated components, make necessary adjustments and bring a custom fixture from individual parts through customer buyoff. Responsibilities Read and interpret mechanical assembly drawings, detail drawings, bills of material and build documentation. Review tool books and determine the proper sequence for assembling custom fixtures. Gather, inspect and organize machined, welded and purchased components. Verify manufactured details against engineering drawings before assembly. Fit and assemble custom lift assists, secure tooling, assembly fixtures and other automotive equipment. Drill, tap, grind, deburr and modify components as needed during assembly. Install pneumatic cylinders, clamps, bearings, balancers, rails, handles, fasteners and other purchased components. Use precision measuring equipment to verify dimensions, alignment and fit. Align, level, adjust and tune fixtures for proper mechanical operation. Identify missing details, dimensional problems and manufacturing issues during assembly. Communicate drawing corrections and required changes to designers and project managers. Coordinate with machinists, welders, the saw department, controls personnel and the shop foreman. Assist with setting up stations and hanging fixtures on Oxbow's shop floor. Participate in internal runoff, customer buyoff and mechanical troubleshooting. Complete customer-requested modifications following buyoff. Maintain an organized work area and follow established safety procedures. Occasionally assist with installation, startup or service work at automotive assembly plants. Required Qualifications Previous experience as a toolmaker, machine builder, fixture builder, mechanical assembler or similar skilled-trade position. Ability to read and understand mechanical assembly and detail drawings. Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting ability. Experience assembling custom machinery, fixtures, tooling or industrial equipment. Ability to use hand tools, power tools and precision measuring equipment. Experience drilling, tapping, grinding, fitting and modifying metal components. Ability to identify dimensional, alignment and assembly problems. Ability to work independently while coordinating with engineering and other skilled trades. Strong attention to detail and pride in producing accurate, professional work. Willingness to learn Oxbow's tooling standards and customer requirements. Preferred Qualifications Experience building automotive assembly tooling, lift assists or secure fixtures. Experience working for a special-machine builder, automation integrator or custom tooling company. Understanding of tolerances and basic GD&T principles. Experience using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators and other inspection equipment. Experience operating manual mills, lathes, surface grinders or other toolroom equipment. Basic welding or fabrication experience. Familiarity with pneumatic cylinders, valves and related components. Experience with machine runoff, customer buyoff, installation or field service. Skilled-trade certification, apprenticeship or technical-school training. Formal education is less important than the ability to read prints, accurately assemble custom tooling and troubleshoot mechanical problems. Work Environment This position is based at Oxbow's manufacturing facility in Livonia, Michigan. The work involves standing, bending, lifting, reaching and performing hands-on assembly around industrial tooling and equipment. Overtime or occasional travel may be required depending on project and customer schedules.
