Job Description
Second Shift CNC Machinist Position We are seeking an experienced Second Shift CNC Machinist to independently set up and operate CNC turning equipment to produce quality parts to engineering specifications. This is a machinist position, not a machine operator. The successful candidate must be capable of taking a CNC lathe job from setup through production with minimal supervision. This includes reading and interpreting prints, selecting and installing tooling, setting work and tool offsets, proving out programs, making necessary adjustments, and inspecting parts to ensure they meet print requirements. The ideal candidate has strong CNC turning experience and understands the fundamentals of lathe setup, tooling, speeds and feeds, work holding, offsets, dimensional control, and troubleshooting . Essential Duties and Responsibilities Independently set up and operate CNC lathes for production and job-shop work. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and job travelers . Determine the proper workholding method , including 3-jaw chucks, collet systems, soft jaws, and other fixtures. Install and set up turning tools, boring bars, drills, reamers, taps, threading tools, grooving tools, cutoff tools, and other tooling . Set tool geometry, tool length, wear offsets, work offsets, and tool nose compensation as required. Load, verify, and prove out CNC programs while maintaining safe machine operation. Make appropriate wear and dimensional offset adjustments to maintain parts within tolerance. Verify critical dimensions including ODs, IDs, lengths, shoulders, tapers, grooves, threads, bores, and other turned features . Understand and maintain tolerances and GD&T requirements . Properly indicate and align workpieces when required and verify runout and concentricity . Maintain consistent part quality throughout production by monitoring tool wear and dimensional trends . Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machining area. Work independently while communicating effectively with supervisors, programmers, and quality personnel. Required Qualifications Minimum 1 year of CNC lathe/machining experience. Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate CNC lathes . Strong understanding of CNC turning operations and machining fundamentals . Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T . Working knowledge of G-code and M-code . Ability to set tool and work offsets and make dimensional adjustments at the machine. Proficient in using micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, thread gauges, and other inspection equipment . Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts. Dependable and capable of working second shift . Preferred Qualifications Experience with CNC turning centers and CNC lathes . Experience with Fanuc or similar CNC controls . Experience with live tooling, C-axis, Y-axis, sub-spindles, or other turning-center features . Experience with CNC threading, grooving, boring, drilling, tapping, profiling, facing, and OD/ID turning . Experience with tight-tolerance machining and production job-shop work . Experience making basic CNC program edits at the machine. Experience with soft-jaw boring and work holding setup . CNC mill setup and operation experience is a bonus. What We Are Looking For This is not a position for someone whose primary experience is loading parts and pushing Cycle Start. We are looking for someone who understands CNC turning and can independently troubleshoot and make decisions during the machining process.
