Job Description
UTEC Industrial machines large, extreme-duty components — alloy-steel crane wheels, sheaves, shafts, rollers, and heavy material-handling parts engineered to run millions of cycles under punishing loads in steel mills, mining, lumber, paper, power generation, aerospace, and defense. We are hiring an experienced Manual & CNC Heavy Industry Machinist at our Spokane Valley headquarters for someone who thrives on big, heavy work: large billets and forgings, large-diameter turning and big-envelope milling, sawing and cutting heavy stock, and hands-on manual machining of oversized parts — held to tight tolerances, with minimal supervision. This is heavy-industrial machining at scale — not small-part, high-mix 4
- or 5-axis production work.
On the CNC side:
Mazak and Monarch CNC lathes turning to 48-inch diameter, a Mori Seiki vertical machining center holding ±0.001 inch, a Marvel gantry saw cutting stock to 50 × 84 inches, and a HyPerformanceHPR260HD

cutting head.On the manual side:
two manual lathes, two knee mills, a horizontal boring mill, an iron worker, multiple steel saws, two hydraulic presses, a radial arm drill, and assorted drill presses. Because UTEC is single-source — machining, sawing, fabrication, and heat treating under one roof — you will routinely rig and handle heavy billets and forgings with overhead cranes and take parts from raw stock through in-house heat treating to finished, tested components. Responsibilities- Machine large, heavy components — crane wheels, sheaves, shafts, rollers, and material-handling parts — to tight tolerances on both manual and CNC equipment
- Rig, lift, and stage heavy billets and forgings using overhead cranes and forklifts
- Saw and cut large raw stock — billets, forgings, and plate — to size on the gantry saw and steel saws
- Set up and operate large-envelope CNC lathes and mills alongside manual lathes, knee mills, and a horizontal boring mill, at the correct speeds and feed rates
- Read and interpret technical blueprints, models, and GD&T
- Inspect and measure large, finished parts to ensure they meet specifications
- Support in-house heat treating — load, monitor, and handle parts through hardening and tempering operations
- Perform routine maintenance and tooling changes on heavy machinery
- Follow all safety standards and wear appropriate PPE — critical when working around heavy stock and overhead cranes
- Document and report any irregularities, and collaborate with engineers and machinists to keep operations running Required qualifications
- 5+ years of machining experience in a heavy-industrial or large-part environment, across both manual and CNC equipment
- Comfortable machining large, heavy components — this is big-part, heavy-duty work, not small-part or high-mix 4
- 5-axis production
- Strong shop math skills — calculate cuts, dimensions, and feeds/speeds, and convert accurately between fractions and decimals
- Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and GD&T
- Basic working knowledge of G-code for CNC programming
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, large-bore and large-OD gauges)
- Experience sawing and cutting heavy stock (billets, forgings, plate) to size
- Able to operate — or willing to be certified on — overhead crane and forklift for rigging large billets and forgings
- Able to lift approximately 50 lbs, stand for a full shift, and work safely around heavy material
- Provide your own basic hand tools and measuring instruments Preferred qualifications
- Large-diameter turning (to ~48 inches) and big-envelope milling or boring
- Manual lathe, knee mill, and horizontal boring mill experience on large parts
- Familiarity with crane wheels, sheaves, or other extreme-duty industrial components
- Familiarity with in-house heat treating (induction hardening, through-hardening, quench-and-temper)
- Tight-tolerance work to ±0.001 inch
- Setup experience on Mazak, Monarch, or Mori Seiki controls
Compensation & Benefits Pay:
$28- 35 per hour, depending on experience.
