CNC Machine Operator Job Description The CNC Machine Operator produces precision machined parts by setting up, programming, and operating CNC machines while consistently meeting quality and safety standards. This role interprets blueprints and engineering drawings, monitors production, and ensures equipment runs efficiently and reliably in a large manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Set up and operate CNC machines using blueprints, engineering drawings, and written instructions to produce machined parts to specification. Program or load CNC programs as required and make appropriate adjustments to machine settings to achieve optimal performance. Inspect parts using precision measurement tools to verify they meet quality standards, tolerances, and customer specifications. Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and adjust machine offsets, tooling, and parameters as needed to maintain quality and productivity. Perform routine and preventative maintenance on CNC equipment to keep machines in good working condition and minimize downtime. Monitor machine operation throughout production runs and respond promptly to alarms, tool wear, or other process variations. Set up and optimize tooling, fixtures, and workholding for multi-axis machining operations as required. Follow all safety guidelines and procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area. Maintain accurate production records, including job documentation, inspection results, and machine logs. Collaborate with team members, engineers, and supervisors to resolve technical issues and continuously improve processes. Perform basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting on equipment to support reliable operation. Support assembly-related tasks as needed to ensure smooth workflow through the production area. Essential Skills Experience in CNC machine operation, including setup and running of CNC lathes and mills. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings. Hands-on experience with machine operation in a manufacturing or machining environment or completion of relevant CNC schooling. Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify part dimensions. Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to interpret and meet tight tolerances. Ability to perform basic CNC programming or program adjustments and edit G-code as needed. Experience with multi-axis machining and tooling setup and optimization. Capability to perform preventative maintenance and basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting on CNC equipment. Strong attention to detail with a focus on producing high-quality parts. Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to production and quality issues. Demonstrated reliability and consistency in attendance, performance, and adherence to procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, Fusion 360, or SolidWorks. Familiarity with G-code editing for process optimization and fine-tuning programs. CNC or trade school certification, with credentials such as NIMS or OSHA considered a plus. Exposure to assembly operations within a manufacturing environment. Comfort working with engineering teams to refine setups, tooling, and machining strategies. Willingness to learn new technologies, processes, and equipment as the facility grows. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a large manufacturing facility equipped with CNC lathes, mills, and multi-axis machining centers, along with CAD/CAM and precision measurement tools. You will work around active machinery, perform hands-on machine operation and maintenance, and collaborate closely with other machinists, technicians, and engineering staff. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Union, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $24.38/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
