Job Title:
Level 3 Machinist - CNC Machine Shop Job Description This mid-level machinist role is based in a large, high-volume machine shop that specializes in metal cutting, drilling, grinding, reaming, boring, deburring, and related operations. The Level 3 Machinist stages material, sets up and operates CNC equipment, performs continuous quality checks using precision measuring tools, and supports a variety of machines and processes across the shop. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, problem-solving, and working across multiple machines rather than being tied to a single piece of equipment. Responsibilities Perform metal cutting, drilling, grinding, reaming, boring, deburring, and other machining operations according to control plans, blueprints, and written instructions. Set up and operate CNC machines, ensuring correct tooling, fixtures, and program selection for each job. Stage parts and raw material using forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment. Load machines with raw material and offload finished parts, ensuring safe and efficient material flow throughout the machine shop. Operate wash tanks and other auxiliary equipment as required to support production. Conduct thorough quality checks at every step of the process using gauges, rules, calipers, micrometers, dial bores, tape measures, steel rulers, and other precision measuring tools. Follow detailed control plans and quality standards for assigned machines and jobs, ensuring parts meet all specification requirements. Interpret and apply blueprint and control plan information to verify part dimensions and tolerances. Use math skills to compare gauge readings to specified tolerances and determine whether parts pass or fail inspection. Perform deburring operations, including cutting plugs and removing excess metal from blocks using air-powered tools and other equipment. Troubleshoot everyday machining and quality issues, making adjustments or escalating concerns to keep production running smoothly. Float between different machines and work areas in the machine shop as needed to support production demands. Maintain production output while adhering to quality standards, housekeeping expectations, and safety requirements. Keep work areas, machines, and equipment clean, organized, and free of debris, completing daily housekeeping responsibilities. Follow all shop policies, including cell phone usage restrictions, no headphone or earbud use, and required PPE at all times in production areas. Participate in thorough training on safety requirements and job-specific procedures, and follow those procedures consistently. Complete daily truck and hoist inspection cards and ensure equipment is in safe working condition. Arrive at designated line-up areas on time with all required PPE and be prepared to begin work at the start of each shift. Collaborate with team members and support general helper duties around the machine shop to ensure parts move efficiently to production. Essential Skills Experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably in or around machine shop operations. Hands-on experience running machines in a manufacturing environment, with CNC machine experience strongly preferred. Baseline experience with gauging and quality checks, including practical use of measuring tools in previous roles. Proficiency using quality measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, dial bores, steel rulers, tape measures, and other precision gauges. Ability to read and interpret metric measuring dials and gauges accurately. Strong basic math skills, including addition and subtraction, to determine deviations from specification and decide whether parts pass inspection. Experience operating sit-down and stand-up forklifts, with confidence in moving material safely around the facility. Troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve everyday production and quality issues. Comfort working on multiple machines and tasks, with flexibility to move from one machine to another as production needs change. Understanding of how to calibrate gauges by comparing them to known standards or reference blocks to ensure measurement accuracy. Ability to explain and correctly use a micrometer, including reading the sleeve and thimble scales and combining those readings to obtain precise measurements. Commitment to following safety procedures, PPE requirements, and facility policies consistently. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and control plans for machined parts. Experience performing quality inspection on finished parts in a machine shop or similar environment. Prior deburring experience, including removing excess metal and finishing machined surfaces. Familiarity with drill presses, grinding machines, boring mills, and other machine shop equipment. Experience with changeovers and machine setup in a production environment. Comfort working in a large manufacturing facility with multiple shifts and a high volume of employees. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow clear, repeatable instructions and standards. Effective communication skills to describe quality processes, tools used, units of measurement, and inspection steps. Why Work Here? You will join a large, well-organized manufacturing operation that invests in its people and community. The company actively engages with local organizations and educational institutions, fostering strong community partnerships. Employee engagement is a priority, with regular events such as seasonal festivals, family-oriented activities, and onsite drives that create a sense of connection and belonging. After 90 days worked, you can apply for full-time roles, offering a clear pathway for long-term employment based on attendance and performance. Full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous paid time off, multiple paid holidays, a competitive 401(k) match, and health, dental, vision, and life insurance that start on the first day of full-time employment. The facility offers multiple shifts and long-term opportunities on off-shifts, providing flexibility for different schedules and career goals. Work Environment The role is based in a large, temperature-controlled manufacturing facility that is split between an assembly area and a machine shop. The machine shop is extensive and operates across five shifts, including weekends, with over 500 employees working in a structured, high-volume environment. Available shifts include traditional 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts during the week, as well as longer 12-hour shifts on designated days, providing multiple scheduling options. Overtime is currently scheduled on alternating Saturdays for much of the year, though this may change based on production needs. The facility maintains a relaxed but professional dress code: sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, work pants, and jeans are acceptable, while leggings and sweatpants are not. The shop is kept very clean with minimal debris, reflecting a strong emphasis on safety and housekeeping. Required PPE includes steel or composite toe shoes, earplugs, and safety glasses; hearing protection and safety glasses are provided onsite. Employees must follow cell phone policies that limit usage to designated break areas and prohibit use while walking, and headphones or other listening devices are not allowed in production areas. Daily equipment inspections, organized workspaces, and thorough safety training contribute to a safe, orderly, and well-managed work environment focused on quality, productivity, and employee well-being.
