CNC Machine Operator Job Description This position is responsible for setting up and operating CNC machinery in an advanced manufacturing environment that produces high-performance composite solutions for aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. You ensure that machining operations meet strict quality, safety, and efficiency standards while interpreting technical documentation and maintaining equipment in optimal condition. Responsibilities Plan machining operations by reviewing work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, reference planes, and machining parameters, and by accurately interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T). Set up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and pushers to meet job requirements. Load the feed mechanism by safely lifting and positioning stock and raw materials for machining. Verify machine settings by measuring positions, first-run parts, and sample workpieces, ensuring adherence to applicable international standards. Monitor and maintain specifications during milling, drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing operations, taking precise measurements and adjusting processes as needed. Detect malfunctions and troubleshoot machining processes by adjusting and reprogramming controls, identifying worn tools, and sharpening or replacing tools as required. Follow established quality assurance procedures and processes to ensure that all parts and components meet required specifications. Maintain safe operations by strictly adhering to safety procedures, regulations, and company policies on the production floor. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment by following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and coordinating needed repairs. Document and communicate actions, irregularities, and ongoing needs by completing production and quality logs and maintaining accurate records. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading relevant technical publications to stay current with industry practices. Support organizational goals by taking ownership of new and different tasks and seeking opportunities to add value to machining and production activities. Assist with and direct the cutting, machining, and configuration of complex block layouts prior to bonding to achieve final dimensional requirements. Adhere to Business Management System requirements and follow established processes and standards throughout all machining activities. Use inspection tools and techniques to verify part quality and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives on the production floor. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience setting up and operating CNC machines, including mills and lathes, in a production environment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders, including geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T). Experience with multi-axis machining, including 3+ axis CNC equipment. Familiarity with tool paths, feeds, and speeds for various materials and machining operations. Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools. Knowledge of quality control and inspection processes within a manufacturing environment. Hands-on experience with troubleshooting machining issues and implementing process improvements. Ability to use hand tools, cutting tools, and tape measures accurately and safely. Experience with production and fabrication processes, including working with composite materials and fiberglass. Capability to operate and monitor machining and machine operating equipment while maintaining consistent output and quality. Strong attention to detail with the ability to detect malfunctions and deviations from specifications. Ability to complete production and quality logs and maintain clear documentation. Commitment to following safety procedures, regulations, and quality assurance standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with advanced composite manufacturing or similar high-precision production environments. Exposure to lean manufacturing principles or continuous improvement methodologies. Ability to train or mentor other CNC operators and share best practices. Familiarity with Business Management Systems and standardized operating procedures. Comfort working with complex block layouts and pre-bond machining configurations. Willingness to participate in ongoing training and educational opportunities to expand technical knowledge. Strong communication skills to effectively document actions and communicate irregularities or process needs. Experience working with inspection processes aligned with international standards.
