Job Title:
Extruder Operator Job Description The Extruder Operator efficiently controls the operation of the extrusion line from raw material input through to finished product. This role sets up, operates, and monitors extrusion equipment, maintains product quality, and ensures a safe, clean, and organized work area while meeting production schedules and customer requirements. Multiple 12-hour shifts are available, with all new team members completing an initial training period on a daytime schedule. Responsibilities Operate the extrusion line from raw material input to finished product, ensuring consistent and efficient production. Set up extrusion equipment, including films and resins, color concentrates and additives, and production speed parameters for input and output. Perform machine start-up and shutdown, changeovers, and manage downtime to maintain optimal production flow. Conduct die and screw tear down, change screen packs, and use line-specific tools while following proper lockout/tagout procedures. Maintain extruded product to required specifications, including gauge, length, width, bond strength, color, dyne level, and surface finish. Identify and address surface defects on extruded products and perform required quality control tests. Accurately double-check measurements and complete data collection procedures according to current quality standards. Record production data in daily production log books, quality control documents, and other required forms. Follow the production schedule and related documentation to meet customer orders and special instructions. Maintain a clean and orderly work area and warehouse to support safe and efficient operations. Follow all company safety policies and procedures and promptly report unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment malfunctions. Communicate line malfunctions and production issues in a timely manner to minimize downtime and maintain productivity. Consistently uphold company quality standards throughout the production process. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall production operation. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent and/or 1-2 years of relevant experience or a forklift certification. Experience with machine operation, preferably in extrusion, production, or general labor environments. Ability to read and interpret production tickets and follow written instructions accurately. Ability to work at an accelerated pace while maintaining attention to detail and product quality. Ability to perform basic math calculations and use measuring tools such as measuring tapes or other instruments. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with team members and supervisors. Basic computer literacy to enter and review production and quality data. Commitment to continuous improvement in processes, quality, and safety. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and bend, stretch, or stand for extended periods of time as required by the role. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience operating extrusion lines or similar production machinery. Forklift certification or experience operating material handling equipment. Familiarity with quality control testing and documentation in a manufacturing environment. Strong awareness of safety practices and experience following lockout/tagout procedures. Ability to work effectively on rotating 12-hour shifts, including day and night schedules. Proactive approach to identifying and communicating equipment or process issues. Why Work Here? Work Environment The work environment is a clean, well-lit production facility focused on safe and efficient operation of extrusion lines. Team members work on rotating 12-hour shifts, with an initial training period on a 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday schedule for approximately two weeks. After training, shifts typically run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for day shift and 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for night shift. The role involves standing for extended periods, bending, stretching, and lifting up to 50 pounds while working around industrial machinery and materials. Standard production-floor attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required to maintain a safe and professional environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
