Job Description

Overview Zimmer Marble has been family owned and operated for over 50 years. We fabricate and install custom granite, quartz, marble, porcelain, and other countertop products throughout the mid-Michigan area. We're looking for a hands-on Countertop Production Lead to help lead our fabrication operation and support countertop installations in the field. This is a working lead position. You will spend the majority of your time working alongside our experienced fabrication team: staging stone, operating automated fabrication equipment, hand fabricating and polishing, troubleshooting problems, and producing finished countertops. The Lead also carries additional responsibility for helping keep production moving, communicating clearly with the shop, installers, and management about priorities and problems, training less-experienced team members, and stepping up when the plan needs to change. Previous stone fabrication experience is preferred, but it is not required. We are also interested in candidates from finish carpentry, cabinetry, millwork, machining, manufacturing, and other skilled trades who have strong mechanical aptitude, care about quality, and are comfortable learning new equipment and processes. Roles & Responsibilities Work alongside the fabrication team to produce custom stone countertops Learn and operate our automated fabrication equipment, including robotic and CNC machinery Stage slabs and pieces to maintain efficient production flow Perform hand fabrication, polishing, finishing, and other production work Inspect your own work and help maintain high quality standards throughout the shop Help translate the production list into efficient day-to-day execution on the shop floor Troubleshoot fabrication, tooling, and equipment problems Perform routine equipment, tooling, and preventative maintenance Help train and cross-train other production employees Provide day-to-day direction and feedback when needed Communicate clearly and proactively with shop employees, installers, and management about priorities, problems, delays, quality concerns, and changes to the plan Assist with countertop installations in the field as workload requires Assist with warehouse, material handling, inventory, and other operational work as needed Maintain a clean and safe shop, jobsite, and work environment Everyone on our team is expected to be flexible. Your primary home will be the fabrication shop, but field installation and other operational work are a normal part of this position when the business needs additional support. Required Skills & Qualifications Professional experience in a skilled trade, fabrication, machining, manufacturing, construction, or similar hands-on environment Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to learn new tools, machinery, and processes Good attention to detail and a high standard for finished work Comfortable using computers and learning software-controlled machinery Comfortable navigating basic computer programs, files, PDFs, and data-entry screens Proficiency with a tape measure and basic shop math Comfortable using hand and power tools Ability to troubleshoot problems and make sound decisions Strong communication skills, including the ability to listen, give clear direction, and work collaboratively with experienced team members Willingness to learn all parts of the fabrication process rather than remain in one specialty Comfortable providing direction, feedback, and training to other employees when needed Willingness to perform both shop and field work Ability to safely perform physically demanding work, including lifting and carrying heavy countertops Valid driver's license with a clean driving record Preferred Experience Experience in any of the following is a plus, but we do not expect candidates to have all of them: Granite, quartz, or stone fabrication Countertop installation Finish carpentry Cabinetry or millwork CNC or robotic machinery Precision manufacturing or machining Equipment maintenance or mechanical troubleshooting Training or leading other skilled-trades employees What We're Looking For The right person does not need to walk in knowing our machines or every aspect of stone fabrication. We can teach our equipment, processes, and stone-specific techniques. We are looking for someone who is: Reliable and takes responsibility for their work Mechanically inclined and comfortable learning Detail focused and takes pride in finished quality Proactive when something needs to be done Flexible and willing to help wherever the workload requires Communicates clearly, listens well, and works collaboratively with others Interested in developing both their technical skills and their ability to lead
