Machine Operator Job Description This role focuses on setting up and operating manual engine lathes to produce and maintain industrial rubber and polyurethane rollers used across a wide range of manufacturing industries. You will measure products with precision tools, follow standard operating procedures and customer requirements, and comply with established manufacturing and safety practices while handling materials with hoists and cranes. Responsibilities Set up and operate manual engine lathes to manufacture, recover, regrind, and repair industrial rollers. Use calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools to accurately measure product dimensions and verify quality. Follow all manufacturing standards, safety protocols, and company procedures during daily operations. Read, understand, and apply standard operating procedures and customer specifications to each job. Use hoists, cranes, and other material-handling equipment to safely move and position workpieces and rollers. Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain accuracy and efficiency. Inspect finished parts to ensure they meet required tolerances and quality expectations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with facility guidelines. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to ensure production goals and timelines are met. Demonstrate a willingness to learn new processes and techniques to support continuous improvement. Essential Skills At least 1 year of machining experience, preferably in a manual machining or machine operating environment. Hands-on experience setting up and running manual engine lathes. Ability to use calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools accurately. Basic math skills for measuring, calculating dimensions, and interpreting tolerances. Ability to read and understand standard operating procedures and customer requirements. Knowledge of manual machining practices and safe machine operation. Capability to follow manufacturing and safety practices consistently. Comfort using hoists and cranes or willingness to learn safe material-handling techniques. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Willingness to learn and adapt to new processes in a production environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with manual lathe operation in a production or repair setting. Experience in general machining or machine operating in the manufacturing sector. Familiarity with a machinist apprenticeship or similar on-the-job training is a plus. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment with long-tenured colleagues. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify and correct machining issues. Good communication skills for sharing information about jobs, quality concerns, and safety. Work Environment This is a family-owned, manufacturing-focused facility that has served the rubber roller industry since 1968, specializing in the production, recovering, regrinding, and repair of industrial rubber and polyurethane rollers used in a wide range of industries. The work is performed in a shop environment with manual engine lathes, measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers, and material-handling equipment including hoists and cranes. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, offering consistent daytime hours. Work is steady and reliable due to ongoing demand for rollers in the manufacturing space, and employees work alongside many experienced, long-tenured team members in a setting that values safety, precision, and long-term stability. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Palmyra, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
