Francis O Day Co., Inc., a leading paving and excavation company that operates in Maryland and Virginia, is seeking experienced Milling Machine Sensor Operators to join our team. The Role As a Milling Machine Sensor Operator, you will play an important role in preparing road surfaces for asphalt paving. You'll operate and monitor milling equipment, work closely with the milling and paving crews, and use sensor and grade-control systems to ensure the proper milling depth, grade, and profile. Key Responsibilities- Operate and monitor asphalt milling machines and associated sensor systems.
- Maintain accurate milling depth, grade, slope, and roadway profile.
- Monitor machine-control and grade/sensor readings during milling operations.
- Make adjustments as needed to maintain specifications and production quality.
- Work closely with the milling foreman, operators, laborers, and paving crew.
- Identify changes in roadway conditions and communicate issues to the crew.
- Perform daily equipment and sensor inspections.
- Assist with basic troubleshooting of sensors and machine-control equipment.
- Follow company safety procedures and all applicable jobsite requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Work efficiently in a fast-paced outdoor construction environment. Qualifications
- 2-3 years of experience in asphalt milling, paving, road construction, or related heavy equipment operations.
- Experience with milling machine sensors, grade controls, or machine-control systems preferred.
- Familiarity with roadway grades, elevations, slopes, and milling depths.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with equipment operators and paving crews.
- Strong commitment to jobsite safety.
- Dependable, punctual, and willing to work as part of a team.
- Ability to operate a Milling Machine is a plus.
Physical Demands:
- The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.
- Ability to appropriately respond to unexpected events quickly.
- This position may require long periods of standing and being subjected to adverse weather conditions.
- Consistently wear common protective or safety equipment.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed outdoors.
- Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Must be available for night and day shifts
