Machine Operator Assistant Job Description This role supports manufacturing operations in a high-volume corrugated packaging facility as a swing-shift Machine Operator Assistant. You work Monday through Thursday from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., with mandatory overtime on Fridays for much of the year. You start as a helper, stacking materials, moving product, and assisting machine operators while you learn the equipment and production processes. As you gain skills and advance through defined position steps, you receive additional compensation and have clear opportunities to grow into a full press operator role. Responsibilities Support machine operators by stacking materials, moving product, and assisting with setup and changeovers. Learn to safely and efficiently operate various pieces of converting equipment in a fast-paced production environment. Effectively learn and apply established quality control procedures to ensure products meet specifications. Read and follow order specification documents and production instructions with strong attention to detail. Execute assigned responsibilities at your work center, maintaining safety, quality, and productivity standards. Consistently work to develop and enhance your skill set to progress toward operating roles. Ask questions, stay curious, and actively seek to understand machine functions and processes. Work closely with co-workers and contribute to a strong team environment to achieve production goals. Follow all company rules, policies, and safety procedures at all times. Successfully work in multiple areas of the converting plant and perform to expectations in each area. Maintain a high sense of urgency while performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving materials. Participate in mandatory overtime, including Friday shifts and occasional weekend work, as required by production demands. Essential Skills Ability to read and write English to understand work orders, safety information, and production documentation. Mechanical aptitude and comfort learning new machine-related skills within standard training timelines. Comfort working around heavy industrial equipment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Ability to mentally and physically perform at a high pace while maintaining safety, quality, and productivity expectations. Strong attention to detail when following specifications and inspecting product quality. Basic math skills and the ability to accurately read and use a tape measure. Ability to consistently lift up to 5075 pounds and perform physically demanding work throughout the shift. Previous manufacturing experience or proven tenure in a physically demanding job. Willingness and ability to work overtime, including mandatory Friday shifts and occasional weekend hours. Eligibility to work in the United States and completion of required drug screen and physical abilities testing. Minimum age of 18 years or older. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in production, general labor, or general manufacturing environments. Exposure to machine operation or machine assisting roles in a manufacturing setting. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and interest in troubleshooting and understanding machine functions. Ability to multitask and manage several responsibilities simultaneously on the production floor. Strong teamwork skills and a collaborative approach to working with a small crew on each machine. Curious mindset with a habit of asking questions to learn processes and equipment. Ambitious, long-term career goals with a desire to move up into press operator positions. Willingness to memorize machine procedures, quality standards, and basic troubleshooting steps. Work Environment You work in a very large, high-volume corrugated packaging plant that operates state-of-the-art converting equipment, including a 112" multiflute corrugator, a 62" single face laminator, multiple rotary die cutters, flexo folder gluers, platten diecutters, and specialty folder gluers. The environment is fast-paced and physically demanding, with frequent lifting and moving of heavy sheets and boxes. The facility can become hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so you should be comfortable working in varying temperatures and in a production setting with significant machine noise and activity. Shifts run on swing hours, typically from 3:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday, with mandatory overtime on Fridays and occasional weekend work. The crew structure on each machine typically consists of three people, each with defined responsibilities. The site includes an internal gym for full-time employees and a large break room with food available for purchase, supporting comfort and wellness during breaks. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.30 - $24.30/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
