Job Description

Orthopedic Technician Location:
Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft.
Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX Overview:
The Orthopedic Technician will support medical staff, inpatients, outpatients, and support personnel at Brooke Army Medical Center to help fulfill its mission. While the specific tasks outlined below detail key responsibilities, additional duties may be assigned as needed. All services shall be performed in accordance with established medical principles, practices, and ethics. The standard of performance must reflect the level of care, skill, and knowledge expected of a reasonably prudent Orthopedic Technician.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, with additional training or education.
Experience:
At least one (1) year of related experience in an accredited healthcare hospital, demonstrating familiarity with hospital or clinic procedures in orthopedics, including orthopedic trauma service, pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and/or spine.
Certification:
Must maintain national certification by either: American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP) National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT)
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, up to 40 hours per week Excludes federal holidays and training holidays
Job Responsibilities:
The Orthopedic Technician will provide the following services in strict compliance with standing orders and protocols established by the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and in accordance with Joint Commission (JC) guidelines: Assist physicians with patient care, including fitting and applying pre-operative braces, crutches, and other orthopedic support devices. Prepare for and assist in the application of casts and orthopedic appliances; change dressings; remove sutures, casts, and splints. Support physicians and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, and fracture reductions. Instruct patients on cast and traction care, as well as the use of orthopaedic appliances. Maintain a clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room; order special supplies and/or equipment as needed. Coordinate data collection resources for clinic information systems. Stay current with orthopedic trends, care, and supplies; perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Experience:
Practical knowledge of examinations, equipment, and procedures necessary for orthopedic care. Familiarity with orthopaedic injuries, disorders, and conditions to effectively communicate with medical personnel. Proficiency in using specialized medical equipment, including: Pulse oximeter Dynamap or equivalent vital sign monitors Cardiac monitor Electrocautery device Cast saw Tourniquet device Mini C-arm TPS (Total Performance System) Compartment Pressure Monitor (Stryker or equivalent) Knowledge of surgical instruments, orthopedic implants, and procedural techniques.
Compensation & Benefits:
Hourly rate: $26.00 hr Health and Welfare (H&W): $4.57
Paid Holidays:
11 days Paid Time Off (PTO): 80 hours accrued annually
