Job Description

Plasma Table & Plate Roll Operator Granite Peak Fabrication builds ASME Code pressure vessels, TES tanks, and process skids for oil and gas, data center, geothermal, power generation, industrial water, and aerospace/defense customers. We deliver superior quality on time at a competitive price, and we're growing fast. We are seeking an experienced Plasma Table & Plate Roll Operator for our Casper, Wyoming shop. The Plasma Table & Plate Roll Operator is a Production position at the front end of every job
  • cutting plate to size on the CNC plasma table and rolling shells, cones, and components on the plate roll for ASME vessels, tanks, and skids.
Accurate cutting and rolling, and full material traceability, set the quality and schedule for everything downstream in fit-up, welding, and QC. Reports to Production leadership. Pay is scaled by skill level as shown below.
Minimum Job Requirements:
2+ years of hands-on experience operating a CNC plasma table and/or plate roll in a steel fabrication shop. Experience on both machines preferred and compensated at a higher rate. Experience in a large production output setting
  • a high-volume fabrication shop with multiple vessels, tanks, and skids in process at the same time
  • and the ability to keep cut and rolled parts ahead of fit-up without letting quality slip. Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, cut lists, nest sheets, and job travelers, including weld preps, bevels, and tolerances. Strong shop math
  • fractions, decimals, and circumference/diameter calculations (including neutral-axis/mean diameter for shell layout)
  • and the ability to use a tape, pi tape, squares, levels, calipers, and radius templates/sweep boards. Understanding of material traceability
  • identifying plate by grade, thickness, and heat number and transferring heat numbers to every cut part before it leaves the table.
This is a firm requirement of an ASME Code shop. Ability to safely rig and move plate and shells with overhead cranes, magnet or plate clamps, and forklifts. Current crane or forklift certification preferred; GPF will train and certify. Must be available to come in on weekends and work late or early as required to meet production schedules and customer ship dates. Ability to lift 50 lbs and to stand, bend, climb, and work on your feet for a full shift around heavy moving equipment. Computer skills sufficient to load and run CNC programs and navigate nesting software (Hypertherm/ProNest, SigmaNEST, or similar). Goal oriented with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, and at times, stressful environment.
Job Responsibilities:
CNC Plasma Table Review the drawing, nest, and job traveler before cutting; confirm material grade, thickness, and heat number match the job requirements. Load and square plate on the table; load programs, set the origin, and verify the nest fits the plate before starting the cut. Select and change consumables and set amperage, gas, cut speed, and torch height for the material and thickness; maintain cut quality (square edges, minimal dross and bevel, correct kerf compensation). Cut bevels and weld preps as specified; check first-piece dimensions against the drawing before running the full nest. Mark every part with job number, part number, and heat number; remove slag and grind edges as required; stage parts for fit-up. Manage remnants
  • mark remnant plate with grade, thickness, and heat number and return it to inventory so it stays traceable.
Plate Roll Calculate cut length for shells and cones from the drawing and verify plate dimensions and squareness before rolling. Pre-bend (pinch) the leading and trailing edges to eliminate flat spots before rolling to diameter. Roll shells, cones, and segments to the specified diameter in progressive passes, accounting for springback; check radius with templates/sweep boards and circumference with a pi tape. Control out-of-roundness, peaking, and long-seam alignment to ASME Section VIII and drawing tolerances; tack long seams or hand off to fit-up as directed. Keep heat numbers visible and protect rolled surfaces from damage; follow GPF procedures to prevent contamination when rolling stainless or aluminum. Know and stay within the machine's rated rolling capacity for material thickness, width, and yield strength; escalate anything outside capacity before rolling. Quality & Documentation Perform in-process dimensional checks and document results on the job traveler; stop and notify QC and Production leadership of any material, dimensional, or drawing discrepancy before proceeding. Support QC and customer or Authorized Inspector (AI) material and dimensional verifications as required. Equipment Care & Coordination Perform daily checks and routine maintenance on the plasma table and plate roll (consumables, water table, filters, lubrication, hydraulics); report equipment issues promptly to minimize downtime. Keep the cutting and rolling area clean and organized; coordinate cut and roll priorities with Production leadership and fit-up so parts arrive in sequence. Teamwork is the key to success. Safety Follow all GPF safety procedures, including PPE, eye and hearing protection, fume control, lockout/tagout, and crane and rigging practices. Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of the rolls and pinch points at all times; never ride or guide plate by hand while the machine is in motion. Stop unsafe work immediately. Pay Scale by
Skill Level:
