This position exists to lead and elevate the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Radiation Control Bureau's licensing and registration programs, ensuring the safe, compliant, and forward-looking use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing technologies across the state. The Licensing Supervisor serves as a key regulatory authority, driving complex, risk-informed decisions and maintaining compatibility with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) standards while enforcing Title 20, Chapter 3 NMAC. This role directly impacts public health and safety by shaping how radiation is regulated, applied, and advanced in medical, industrial, and energy sectors throughout New Mexico. In this capacity, the position provides strategic leadership over a high-performing, multidisciplinary team responsible for radioactive materials licensing, x-ray registration, radiological service certification, and incident response. The supervisor ensures regulatory consistency, technical rigor, and operational excellence while mentoring staff and strengthening program capabilities in health physics, radiological science, and compliance. This role is ideal for professionals with backgrounds in NRC or Agreement State programs, health physics, or advanced radiologic practice (e.g., ARRT-certified technologists) who are seeking to expand their influence beyond operations into policy, leadership, and statewide program impact. It offers a unique opportunity to shape regulatory direction, develop technical expertise at scale, and play a defining role in radiation safety across New Mexico. How does it get done? Lead and scale a high-performing radiation protection program, setting clear priorities and driving timely execution of statewide licensing, registration, and inspection activities aligned with NRC-compatible standards Serve as the program's senior technical authority, providing expert guidance in health physics, radiological safety, and regulatory compliance to ensure defensible, risk-informed decision-making Build, mentor, and retain top talent from health physics, radiography, and radiation safety backgrounds by fostering a culture of accountability, professional growth, and technical excellence Direct all personnel and operational functions, including recruitment, hiring, performance management, and workforce planning to maintain a highly capable and mission-ready team Oversee program performance metrics, including inspection goals and licensing timelines, ensuring consistency, quality, and compliance with state and federal expectations Drive continuous improvement and strategic initiatives that modernize regulatory processes, enhance efficiency, and strengthen public health and safety outcomes, offering professionals an opportunity to expand their impact beyond clinical or industrial roles Who are the customers? New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Ideal Candidate New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Minimum Qualification Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. In-state travel up to 20% with optional out-of-state travel. Position requires extensive communication interacting with contractors, the regulated community, environmental non-profit organizations ,and the general public.
