PACKAGING AND FOAM FABRICATION TECHNICIAN

Department Report to FLSA Job Type Manufacturing Aaron Booker Non-Exempt Full-Time Job Summary The Packaging & Foam Fabrication Technician is responsible for designing, fabricating, and assembling custom packaging solutions, including wooden crates, shipping containers, and precision foam inserts used to protect aerospace tooling, equipment, fabricated assemblies, and Department of Defense (DoD) products during storage, transportation, and shipment. This position supports Field International's aerospace manufacturing operations by ensuring packaging solutions meet customer specifications, shipping requirements, quality standards, and export compliance regulations. The Packaging & Foam Fabrication Technician utilizes woodworking, fabrication, blueprint interpretation, and foam-cutting techniques to develop protective packaging solutions while maintaining productivity, safety, and product integrity. Duties and Responsibilities Packaging & Fabrication Operations

• Fabricate custom wooden crates, boxes, skids, and packaging solutions using engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
• Construct packaging systems designed to protect aerospace tooling, fabricated components, assemblies, and sensitive equipment during transportation and storage.
• Operate hand tools, power tools, saws, drills, nail guns, fastening equipment, and fabrication machinery.
• Fabricate custom foam inserts and protective packaging materials using manual and CNC foam-cutting equipment.
• Measure, cut, shape, and assemble foam components to ensure proper fit and protection of customer products.
• Select appropriate materials based on product requirements, weight, fragility, and shipping conditions.
• Verify packaging dimensions and configurations meet engineering and customer specifications.
• Support prototype and custom packaging development projects. Quality & Compliance
• Inspect completed crates, packaging assemblies, and foam inserts for quality, workmanship, fit, and dimensional accuracy.
• Verify packaging solutions comply with customer, aerospace, and shipping requirements.
• Ensure packaging materials and methods adequately protect products from damage during handling and transport.
• Maintain accurate production, inventory, and material usage records.
• Identify non-conforming conditions and participate in corrective action activities.
• Support compliance with AS9100 quality management systems and company quality procedures.
• Assist with documentation required for packaging validation and customer requirements. Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Collaborate with Engineering to develop packaging designs and protective solutions.
• Work with Logistics, Shipping, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure packaging supports operational objectives.
• Support customer-specific packaging, export, preservation, and shipping requirements.
• Recommend packaging improvements that increase product protection and operational efficiency.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, safety, and productivity. Equipment Maintenance & Safety
• Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance of woodworking and foam fabrication equipment.
• Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs as necessary.
• Follow OSHA requirements and all Company safety policies and procedures.
• Properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
• Properly handle raw materials, packaging products, and manufacturing equipment.
• Support workplace 5S and housekeeping initiatives. ITAR & Export Compliance
• Comply with all International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and Company export control procedures.
• Protect controlled technical data and customer information.
• Follow all applicable export compliance requirements associated with aerospace and defense programs.
• Support documentation and traceability requirements related to export-controlled materials and products. Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not have direct supervisory authority but may assist in training and mentoring new packaging and fabrication personnel as needed. Qualifications Required Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Technical or vocational training in woodworking, fabrication, manufacturing, or related field preferred.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in crate building, packaging fabrication, woodworking, or industrial manufacturing.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, packaging specifications, and work instructions.
• Experience utilizing hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
• Basic mathematical and measurement skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently and meet production schedules. Preferred Qualifications
• Experience operating foam-cutting equipment, including CNC cutting systems.
• Aerospace or defense manufacturing experience.
• Experience packaging high-value, sensitive, or precision equipment.
• Familiarity with AS9100 quality systems.
• Knowledge of shipping, preservation, and packaging standards.
• Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.
• Forklift and material handling equipment experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of package design, fabrication, and protective packaging methods.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate fabrication tools and equipment.
• Ability to accurately measure and fabricate components to specified dimensions.
• Knowledge of shipping and handling requirements for sensitive aerospace equipment.
• Strong craftsmanship and attention to detail.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Strong organizational and inventory-control capabilities.
• Ability to identify and solve fabrication and packaging challenges. Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds regularly with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate tools, machinery, and fabrication equipment.
• Ability to perform repetitive cutting, lifting, assembly, and material-handling activities.
• Ability to bend, kneel, reach, climb, and perform physical manufacturing tasks.
• Ability to work around wood products, foam materials, packaging materials, and manufacturing machinery.
• Ability to wear required PPE and comply with workplace safety requirements. ITAR Requirements
• Must qualify as a U.S. Person as defined by ITAR regulations or otherwise be eligible to obtain the required export authorizations.
• Must comply with all Company export control policies and procedures.
• Ability to handle controlled technical data and defense-related products in accordance with regulatory requirements.
