Job Description
We're looking for an experienced stainless steel plate fitter to lay out, fit, align and prepare custom plate weldments for our welding team. This role requires accuracy, strong blueprint-reading ability, practical math skills, and pride in proper fit up. Candidates must show a history of dependable attendance and a strong work ethic. About Us Custom Steel Fabricators, Inc. is a stainless steel plate fabricator located near downtown Columbia, TN, proudly operating since 1973. We supply exhaust stacks, tanks, pressure vessels and other items fabricated from stainless steel plate to a wide range of industries across the country and overseas. Position Details Full‑time day shift position Overtime and occasional night shift may be required due to shop demand Responsibilities Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols to plan layout and fabrication sequence Compute layout dimensions and mark reference points on plate stock using a tape measure, square, and calculator Fit and align fabricated plate components for welding, ensuring dimensional accuracy and proper fit-up Lay out cut lines, holes, and weld joints on stainless, carbon steel, and nickel alloy plate Position and secure workpieces using clamps, jigs, or fixtures prior to welding Inspect fitted assemblies against blueprint specifications before handoff to welders Communicate with welders and shop leads to resolve layout or fit-up issues Requirements Minimum 1 year of plate fabrication or fitting experience Ability to efficiently read and interpret blueprints and prepare layouts Proficiency with a tape measure, square, and calculator Basic math skills including geometry and measurement conversions Ability to work with stainless steel; carbon steel and nickel alloy experience a plus Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality Ability to handle plate materials and stand for extended periods in a shop environment Experience with MIG/TIG tack welding for fit-up purposes Familiarity with CAD shop drawings This is not a general-labor position. Applicants must have relevant stainless steel plate fitting experience. General laborers and non-welders need not apply.
