Job Description
What You'll Do This is a hands-on risk leadership role for an experienced engineer, process safety professional, or operational risk leader who enjoys working at the intersection of engineering, operations, safety, and business risk . As the Operational Risk Assessment Manager, you'll work with operations, engineering, HSE/OE, and commercial teams to identify and understand the risks that could have the greatest impact on people, operations, assets, and the business. You'll help evaluate whether critical controls are effective, identify opportunities to reduce risk, and work with leaders to make sure significant residual risks are appropriately managed. The role is less about simply documenting risk and more about understanding how things can go wrong, determining whether the right safeguards are in place, and helping the business make better decisions about risk . You'll have the opportunity to influence risk management across complex, high-hazard industrial operations and help build a more consistent and proactive approach to managing major operational risks. Key Responsibilities Lead and support the assessment and management of major hazard and operational risks across global operations. Apply engineering and process safety principles to understand loss scenarios, risk drivers, and potential consequences. Identify critical controls and evaluate whether safeguards are properly designed, implemented, and performing as intended. Partner with engineering, operations, maintenance, and HSE/OE teams to strengthen risk controls and close gaps. Provide technical expertise in operational risk assessment, hazard analysis, control effectiveness, and risk mitigation. Evaluate potential loss scenarios involving people, equipment, facilities, production, and business interruption. Help translate technical risk assessments into practical recommendations that operational leaders can act on. Support the development and maintenance of risk registers, critical control frameworks, risk dashboards, and management reporting. Analyze operational risk trends and identify recurring issues, emerging exposures, and opportunities for improvement. Work with leadership to prioritize risk-reduction initiatives based on potential severity, likelihood, and business impact. Support the evaluation of residual risks and determine when additional mitigation, risk retention, or insurance may be appropriate. Partner with business and functional leaders to incorporate risk considerations into capital projects, operational planning, process changes, and strategic initiatives. Support continuous improvement of risk management practices, tools, and governance across the organization. Communicate complex technical and operational risks clearly to both technical teams and senior leadership. What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who can bring strong technical and operational experience to risk management . You may come from a process safety, engineering, operational excellence, reliability, EHS, or industrial risk background and have developed a broader understanding of enterprise and insurable risk.
Ideally, You'll Have:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, risk management, business, or a related technical discipline. Engineering degrees are strongly preferred. 10+ years of experience in process safety, operational risk, engineering, reliability, HSE/OE, enterprise risk, or a related discipline within a complex industrial environment. Experience working in manufacturing, chemicals, mining, energy, refining, or another high-hazard industry. Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies, hazard analysis, critical controls, and risk mitigation. Experience evaluating the effectiveness of safeguards, barriers, or critical controls. Ability to understand complex industrial processes and identify credible loss scenarios and their potential consequences. Experience working directly with operations and engineering teams rather than operating solely in a corporate or administrative risk function. Strong analytical skills and the ability to use data and technical information to identify meaningful risk trends and priorities. Ability to influence operational leaders and technical teams without relying solely on authority. Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risk concepts to senior business leaders. Professional certifications such asCCPS, CSP, ARM, IRM, ERM
, or similar credentials are a plus. What Will Make You Successful The ideal candidate is someone who can move comfortably between the plant floor, engineering teams, and executive leadership . You know how industrial systems work, understand how failures can develop into major events, and can identify where controls need to be strengthened. You don't have to come from a traditional insurance background. In fact, we're particularly interested in candidates who have built their careers in engineering, process safety, operational excellence, reliability, or industrial risk and want to expand their impact into broader operational and enterprise risk. The goal isn't simply to identify risks or build reports. It's to understand the risks that matter most, improve the controls that manage them, and help the business make informed decisions about where to focus its resources. #INDE Pay:
