Demopolis, AL The Opportunity When you join Smurfit Westrock, you will be joining a team that creates sustainable paper and packaging solutions that help move the world forward. In this role, you will monitor Board Mill operations and direct crew members to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable production across the pulp dryer, finishing department, additives area, and board machine. You will work closely with operations, maintenance, and technical teams to optimize performance, maintain product quality, and support continuous improvement initiatives. This role also provides leadership and development for a portion of the Technical Department's crew members, directly contributing to operational excellence and the success of the mill. How you will impact
Smurfit Westrock:
Lead Board Mill operations to achieve safety, environmental, production, quality, and cost performance goals while ensuring compliance with company policies, procedures, and permit requirements. Supervise and develop a team of 22 to 25 hourly employees per shift (12-hour rotating shift) by providing direction, coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing support for employee growth and accountability. Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards and reinforcing safe work practices throughout the department. Coordinate planned and unplanned maintenance activities with maintenance and engineering teams to maximize equipment reliability and operational efficiency. Monitor and troubleshoot manufacturing processes through crew engagement, process data analysis, trend monitoring, and the application of established troubleshooting procedures. Communicate operational issues, improvement opportunities, and corrective actions to management while supporting timely problem resolution. Review and verify completion of critical operational documentation, including preventive maintenance inspections, safety requirements, housekeeping standards, Best Management Practices, and equipment integrity checks. Manage workforce scheduling, timekeeping, training, and crew staffing needs through daily roster planning and administration of the Workforce time management system.
What you need to succeed:
Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of 5 years of related manufacturing, operations, or industrial experience. Experience leading or managing hourly crews in a paper mill environment. Preferred Qualifications Technical degree, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in a related field. Experience with process troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives in a manufacturing environment. Experience using computerized timekeeping, scheduling, and production management systems (e.g., Workforce). Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional activities with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams.
