Make Complicated Simple™. The Lumber Yard Supervisor is responsible for providing daily leadership, direction, and assignments for yard and warehouse associates. The Lumber Yard team is responsible for the safe and efficient receiving, handling, stocking, pulling, staging, loading, and order fulfillment of dimensional lumber, sheet goods, and engineered wood products to meet and exceed customer demand and expectations. The Lumber Yard Supervisor will work alongside their team to maintain safe, organized, and efficient yard operations while meeting established productivity and service goals. This position requires a strong working knowledge of lumber and building materials, including product dimensions, grades, types, and proper handling and storage practices. The Lumber Yard Supervisor will work both inside and outside in varying weather conditions and will routinely operate or work around powered industrial equipment. The position will work directly with the Warehouse, Operations, and/or Branch Manager and will have significant influence in areas including staffing, employee engagement and development, training, productivity, safety, and accountability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a Full-Time position. Normal days of work are Mondays through Fridays; shift availability may vary. Hours may need to be extended or adjusted at any time, with or without notice, to meet the needs of the organization. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for the daily planning, organization, and direction of Lumber Yard operations to ensure safety, productivity, accuracy, quality, and customer service goals are met. Lead and direct yard associates in the receiving, unloading, stocking, pulling, staging, loading, and movement of lumber and building materials. Provide hands-on leadership and routinely work alongside team members to accomplish daily operational requirements. Maintain a strong working knowledge of dimensional lumber, sheet goods, and engineered wood products , including proper identification, handling, storage, and staging requirements. Ensure dimensional lumber, plywood, OSB, MDF, LVL, I-joists, glulam, and other engineered wood products are properly handled, stacked, stored, and protected from damage. Ensure materials are accurately pulled and staged according to customer orders, delivery schedules, and established operating procedures. Inspect incoming and outgoing materials for visible damage, quantity discrepancies, product identification, and general quality. Organize and maintain lumber yard locations to maximize space, accessibility, inventory accuracy, and safe product movement. Ensure designated work areas are supplied with appropriate material and that products are safely piled, stacked, banded, or secured in designated locations. Operate powered industrial equipment, including forklifts, combilifts, and other material-handling equipment, to safely manipulate and move lumber and building materials. Ensure equipment is operated safely and properly maintained; report equipment concerns, damage, or unsafe conditions promptly. Work with the Warehouse Manager, Operations Manager, or Branch Manager to effectively manage staffing and overtime based on business needs. Provide daily direction, priorities, and assignments to yard associates and communicate changes throughout the day as operational needs change. Monitor workflow and productivity and adjust staffing and priorities as necessary to meet customer and delivery requirements. Train, coach, and develop employees on proper material handling, product identification, equipment operation, safety procedures, and company expectations. Work with Operations Management and/or the Continuous Improvement Supervisor to conduct team meetings, review KPI boards, communicate performance expectations, and promote an engaged workforce. Provide feedback to management regarding staffing needs, employee performance, hiring, training, recognition, discipline, and development. Conduct or assist with employee performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and feedback. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment throughout the lumber yard, warehouse, loading areas, and associated work areas. Follow and comply with OrePac policies and procedures and all applicable state and federal laws. Responsible for adhering to OrePac's Safety Program and actively promoting safe work behaviors throughout the department. Participate in safety training, observations, inspections, and incident investigations as requested. Communicate effectively with drivers, sales personnel, operations leadership, customers, and other departments to support accurate and timely order fulfillment. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
FORKLIFT AND EQUIPMENT DUTIES
Forklift and powered industrial equipment duties may be assigned to this position. Any assigned forklift duties will first require taking and passing the required training course and obtaining the appropriate certification. Equipment duties may include, but are not limited to: Safely operating forklifts, combilifts, and other powered industrial equipment. Loading and unloading dimensional lumber, sheet goods, engineered wood products, and other building materials. Staging and stacking materials neatly, securely, and safely. Maintaining awareness of pedestrians, vehicles, overhead hazards, uneven surfaces, and changing yard conditions. Performing required equipment inspections and reporting maintenance or safety concerns. Refueling equipment as required and maintaining appropriate fluid levels in accordance with company procedures.
