POSITION SUMMARY
The Production Supervisor is responsible for leading day-to-day production activities in a food manufacturing environment, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations. This position directs production employees, coordinates labor and line activities, monitors productivity and downtime, and partners with Quality Assurance, Sanitation, Maintenance, Warehouse, and other departments to meet production schedules and customer requirements. The Production Supervisor reports directly to the Production Manager.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise daily production activities and employees across assigned production lines, rooms, or shifts.
  • Execute the daily production schedule while meeting targets for safety, food safety, quality, labor efficiency, yield, throughput, and on-time completion.
  • Assign labor and adjust staffing throughout the shift based on production priorities, line performance, call-offs, changeovers, and operational needs.
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings and communicate production priorities, safety expectations, quality requirements, and performance goals.
  • Monitor line start-up, run time, downtime, changeovers, production rates, and labor utilization; take corrective action when performance falls below expectations.
  • Ensure employees follow GMPs, SSOPs, HACCP/food safety programs, allergen controls, sanitation requirements, and applicable USDA/FDA and company procedures.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance to address food safety, product quality, labeling, specification, hold, and documentation concerns.
  • Verify production paperwork and records are accurate, complete, and submitted in accordance with company requirements.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance on equipment issues and escalate downtime or recurring mechanical problems that may affect production.
  • Ensure proper product handling, temperature control, lot traceability, material usage, packaging, labeling, and finished-product disposition.
  • Support inventory accuracy by controlling raw materials, packaging, work-in-process, rework, and production returns within assigned areas.
  • Enforce company safety policies, identify unsafe conditions, report incidents, and participate in corrective and preventive actions.
  • Train, coach, and develop production employees and leads; provide clear expectations and timely performance feedback.
  • Address attendance, conduct, performance, and policy issues in coordination with the Production Manager and Human Resources.
  • Maintain clean, organized, audit-ready production areas and support internal, customer, regulatory, and third-party audits.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce waste and downtime, improve yield, and strengthen standard work.
  • Complete shift handoffs and communicate production status, staffing concerns, equipment issues, quality concerns, and outstanding action items.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree in Operations, Food Science, Business, or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or lead experience in food manufacturing, meat/poultry processing, prepared foods, or a similar production environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GMPs, HACCP, food safety, sanitation, allergen controls, and production documentation.
  • Experience managing hourly employees in a fast-paced, labor-intensive manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to interpret production schedules, specifications, work instructions, and performance data.
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, organization, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook and Excel; experience with ERP or production reporting systems preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early starts, overtime, weekends, or alternate shifts as production needs require.
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a production environment.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated or temperature-controlled production areas and around wet floors, moving equipment, noise, and food-processing machinery.
  • Must comply with required personal protective equipment, hygiene, and food safety practices.
SUCCESS MEASURES
Performance will be measured through safe operations, food safety and quality compliance, schedule attainment, labor productivity, yield and waste control, downtime reduction, accurate documentation, employee development, attendance management, and effective cross-functional communication.
