POSITION SUMMARY
The Scenic / Props Fabricator is a skilled, hands-on position responsible for building custom scenic elements, props, architectural features, and specialty fabrication pieces for themed entertainment, experiential environments, museums, exhibits, trade shows, and commercial projects. This role requires strong experience in both carpentry and welding fabrication, with the ability to work across multiple materials and fabrication methods. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced fabrication environment and can move between wood fabrication, metal fabrication, scenic construction, assembly, and installation as projects require. Experience operating CNC machinery, reading shop drawings, and problem solving in the field is highly valued. This role works both in the fabrication shop and on active job sites and requires strong craftsmanship, adaptability, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Scenic & Props Fabrication Fabricate custom scenic elements, props, display structures, architectural features, and specialty fabrication pieces using wood, metal, plastics, foam, fiberglass, and mixed materials. Construct framing, substructures, scenic facades, cabinetry, platforms, welded assemblies, and support systems. Perform both rough and finish carpentry including layout, assembly, laminating, trim work, and detail fabrication. Perform MIG and TIG welding for structural and cosmetic fabrication applications. Interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and installation plans to ensure accurate construction and assembly. Assist with sculptural builds, scenic texture application, prop assembly, and specialty finishes when required. Operate standard fabrication equipment including table saws, miter saws, routers, sanders, welders, grinders, and pneumatic tools. CNC & Digital Fabrication Operate or assist with CNC routers, machining equipment, and digital fabrication tools. Prepare materials for CNC cutting and assist with assembly of machined components. Experience with CNC operation, CAM workflows, or fabrication software is considered a strong plus. Installation & Field Work Assist with installation of scenic environments, props, architectural features, cabinetry, signage, and custom fabricated elements. Ensure installations are level, secure, structurally sound, and aligned with project specifications. Troubleshoot installation challenges and develop practical field solutions. Coordinate with project managers and installation crews to complete projects safely and efficiently. Shop Operations & Quality Control Maintain organized and safe work areas throughout the fabrication process. Perform quality checks to ensure projects meet MAD Creative Fabrication standards. Identify fabrication issues early and communicate solutions proactively. Assist with material prep, loading, packaging, and transportation of fabricated components. Support team members across departments as production schedules shift. Safety & Collaboration Follow all shop and job site safety procedures including proper PPE use. Maintain safe operation of fabrication tools, welding equipment, and machinery. Communicate clearly with supervisors, project managers, designers, and fellow fabricators. Remain flexible and adaptable to accelerated production schedules and changing priorities.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in scenic fabrication, props fabrication, carpentry, welding, or custom fabrication environments. Strong working knowledge of woodworking and metal fabrication tools and equipment. Experience with MIG welding required; TIG welding experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and fabrication plans. Experience with scenic installation and field fabrication. Familiarity with CNC routers, machining, or digital fabrication workflows is a plus. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Strong craftsmanship, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail. Dependable, punctual, and self-motivated. Ability to adapt to fast-paced production schedules. Fluent Spanish communication skills are preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand, bend, and work for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials and equipment. Ability to work on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. Regular use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and fabrication machinery. Ability to work in both fabrication shop environments and active job sites.
WORK SCHEDULE
This is a full-time position averaging 40 hours per week. Overtime may be required to meet production deadlines and is compensated in accordance with federal and state law. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a 45-minute unpaid lunch break and two paid 15-minute breaks per day. Availability for extended or adjusted hours may be required based on project schedules.
