Precision Metal Stamping, Tooling and Manufacturing Position Summary We are seeking an experienced CNC Machining Supervisor to lead daily CNC department operations within a precision metal-stamping and tooling environment. This position is responsible for supervising CNC machinists and programmers, assigning workloads, monitoring production schedules, supporting machine setups and programming, troubleshooting machining problems, and ensuring all components meet blueprint and quality requirements. The ideal candidate must be a hands-on CNC professional with strong leadership experience and advanced knowledge of CNC milling, turning, setup, programming, tooling, precision measurement, and close-tolerance manufacturing. Experience supporting the metal-stamping, tool-and-die, progressive-die, or precision-tooling industry is strongly preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Department Supervision Supervise, train, coach, and develop CNC machinists, programmers, setup technicians, and operators. Assign daily workloads based on production schedules, customer priorities, machine capabilities, and employee skill levels. Coordinate CNC department priorities with Engineering, Tool and Die, Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Planning. Monitor employee performance, productivity, workmanship, attendance, safety, and adherence to company procedures. Provide hands-on technical assistance with complex setups, programming, troubleshooting, and inspection. Ensure employees understand blueprints, job instructions, tooling requirements, quality standards, and production expectations. Assist with interviewing, onboarding, training, performance reviews, and employee development. Identify training needs and develop employees in programming, setup, inspection, and troubleshooting. Maintain appropriate staffing and recommend overtime or additional resources when necessary. Promote teamwork, accountability, urgency, safety, and continuous improvement throughout the department. CNC Programming and Setup Review CNC programs, setup sheets, tooling requirements, engineering drawings, and manufacturing instructions. Program, set up, and operate CNC mills, lathes, machining centers, and related equipment when needed. Create, edit, optimize, and troubleshoot G-code and M-code programs. Support offline programming and CAD/CAM operations. Select cutting tools, inserts, holders, fixtures, feeds, speeds, work offsets, and machining strategies. Verify proper machine setup, workholding, tool alignment, offsets, and fixture placement. Support first-piece runs, prove-outs, new programs, engineering changes, and new-product launches. Reduce setup times and improve cycle times without compromising quality or safety. Ensure programs, setup documentation, and tooling information are properly controlled and maintained. Develop standardized setup procedures and machining practices. Production and Technical Support Ensure CNC work is completed according to production schedules and departmental priorities. Monitor machine utilization, cycle times, output, scrap, rework, and downtime. Troubleshoot machining problems involving dimensions, finish, chatter, vibration, tool wear, offsets, workholding, or machine performance. Respond quickly to production interruptions and develop corrective actions to reduce downtime. Coordinate with Maintenance when mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control, or equipment repairs are required. Work with Engineering and Tool and Die personnel to manufacture punches, inserts, forms, fixtures, gauges, die components, replacement parts, and other precision tooling. Review machining methods and recommend improvements to tooling, workholding, programming, and workflow. Ensure raw materials, cutting tools, fixtures, gauges, and job documentation are available before production begins. Monitor tooling consumption and maintain appropriate cutting-tool and insert inventories. Support preventive maintenance and equipment-reliability programs. Coordinate outsourced machining or specialized services when internal capabilities or capacity are limited. Quality and Inspection Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, surface-finish requirements, and customer specifications. Verify first-piece, in-process, and final inspection requirements. Inspect precision parts using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, bore gauges, gauge blocks, optical comparators, and other measuring instruments. Work closely with Quality to resolve dimensional or workmanship concerns. Investigate nonconforming parts, scrap, rework, and customer-quality issues. Lead root-cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions. Ensure machinists accurately complete inspection records and production documentation. Maintain compliance with established quality systems, procedures, and document-control requirements. Promote a strong quality-at-the-source culture throughout the CNC department. Safety and Continuous Improvement Enforce machine guarding, lockout/tagout, personal protective equipment, and safe operating procedures. Ensure employees follow proper lifting, material-handling, chip-removal, and machine-cleaning practices. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machining department. Conduct regular safety and equipment inspections. Lead or participate in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, setup-reduction, waste-reduction, and continuous-improvement projects. Identify opportunities to improve machine utilization, cycle time, tooling life, quality, workflow, and departmental efficiency. Track departmental performance through production, quality, downtime, delivery, and safety metrics. Perform additional supervisory or technical duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED is required. Minimum of seven years of CNC machining experience. Minimum of two to three years of CNC supervisory, lead, or team-lead experience. Advanced hands-on experience with CNC milling, turning, setup, operation, and programming. Ability to create, edit, and troubleshoot G-code and M-code programs. Experience with multi-axis machining is strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, tool holders, workholding, feeds, speeds, offsets, and machining processes. Advanced blueprint-reading and GD&T knowledge. Experience manufacturing close-tolerance tooling and precision components. Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision measuring instruments. Ability to troubleshoot dimensional, tooling, programming, and machine-performance problems. Knowledge of tool steels, heat-treated materials, stainless steel, aluminum, and other machinable metals. Understanding of preventive maintenance and machine-reliability practices. Working knowledge of machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and manufacturing-safety requirements. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and manufacturing systems. Strong leadership, organization, communication, coaching, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime when business needs require it. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a metal-stamping, tool-and-die, progressive-die, mold, or precision-tooling environment. Technical degree, CNC certificate, machining apprenticeship, or Journeyman certification. Experience with Mastercam or similar CAD/CAM programming software. Experience with Haas, Mazak, Okuma, Doosan, Mori Seiki, or comparable CNC equipment. Experience with three-axis, four-axis, or five-axis CNC machining. Knowledge of wire EDM, sinker EDM, surface grinding, manual machining, and related toolroom processes. Experience machining punches, dies, inserts, forms, fixtures, gauges, and replacement tooling components. Familiarity with ERP, scheduling, machine-monitoring, or manufacturing-execution systems. Experience managing departmental budgets, equipment purchases, tooling inventories, and outside vendors. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, or continuous-improvement experience. Visual ability to inspect fine details and accurately read blueprints, gauges, displays, and measuring instruments. Ability to work around moving machinery, metal chips, cutting fluids, industrial noise, oils, and varying temperatures. Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety shoes.
