KEY REQUIREMENTS

Duties:
The incumbent will be required to satisfactorily perform some of the following tasks as assigned:
Perform steps in the processing of artificial diet medium.
Infest insect food and eggs into larval rearing containers.
Wash and sterilize insect food holding containers.
Position larval rearing containers on movable racks and place in dark room area for a seven-day holding period.
Remove movable racks from dark room area and place larval rearing containers on cut
- out racks for insect pupae collection.
Assemble and position larval pupation boxes beneath larval rearing container cut-out racks and place shields on boxes to prevent larval escape.
Collect pupation boxes containing pupae for box sealing and placement in adult emergence racks.
Collect emerging adults from emergence traps; chill and measure desired numbers of insects for culture maintenance and shipment of irradiated adults.
Package irradiated adults in sealed styrofoam boxes containing frozen ice packs for shipment.
Assemble egg-laying cages.
Collect egg-laying pads daily, requiring removal and replacement of egg pads, pad weights and feeding pads on each egg layer cage.
Place egg pads on spindle apparatus for further treatment.
Burn and dispose of terminated rearing boxes, tubs, egg layers, and other trash.
Wash and clear rearing racks, tub baskets, and air conditioner filters.
Help maintain clean sanitary conditions in all work areas and restroom facilities of the rearing laboratory, which includes sweeping, mopping and scrubbing floors, walls, work surfaces, toilet and shower facilities.
Skill and Knowledge:
Incumbent must have the ability to do repetitive tasks that have more than a few work steps. Must be familiar with the sequence of stamps to move from one step to another.
Responsibility:
Incumbent receives initial oral or written instructions for each assignment and tasks are done according to established procedures. Work is checked regularly for accuracy and adherence to standards.
Physical Effort:
Tasks require moderate physical effort such as reaching, lifting, scrubbing, and constant standing. The lifting may occasionally exceed fifty (50 lbs) pounds.
Working Conditions:
The work is predominantly inside a well-lighted building. High humidity and higher
- than-average temperatures may be encountered in some areas.
Respiratory discomfort from moth scales may require the incumbent to wear protective masks. He is exposed to the possibility of bruises, cuts, and falls on slippery floors. The incumbent may be required to use gloves and treat eggs and utensils in sterilizing solutions.
