Position Summary Sierra Nevada Cheese Company is seeking an experienced Quality Control Supervisor to lead daily QC laboratory operations and supervise Laboratory Technicians and the Regulatory & Compliance Specialist. This position is responsible for ensuring laboratory testing and quality activities are accurate, timely, properly documented, and completed according to established procedures and specifications. The Supervisor plays a key role in product quality and food safety through oversight of laboratory testing, employee proficiency, product holds, OOS investigations, environmental monitoring, third-party testing, QA Studios, regulatory compliance, and root cause analysis. Dairy manufacturing, food safety, laboratory, and laboratory supervision experience are required.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate daily laboratory activities, priorities, projects, and staff assignments; train, coach, and develop team members while promoting accuracy, accountability, teamwork, and food safety.
- Ensure required chemical, physical, and microbiological testing—including solids, moisture, pH, milk content, plating, and environmental monitoring—is completed accurately and on schedule.
- Review laboratory results and records for completeness, accuracy, and follow-up; ensure timely entry into QA Studios and other quality systems.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, calibration and verification programs, supplies, testing materials, and employee proficiency.
- Manage laboratory-related product holds and investigate out-of-specification, abnormal, or questionable results; coordinate communication, testing, disposition, root cause analysis, corrective action, and follow-up.
- Investigate quality issues, environmental findings, and customer complaints; identify trends and recommend preventive or corrective improvements.
- Partner with Production, Sanitation, Maintenance, and QA to resolve quality and food safety concerns and provide reliable data for product release decisions.
- Develop and maintain laboratory SOPs, methods, forms, and audit-ready records; coordinate third-party laboratory submissions and follow-up.
- Support SQF, FDA, CDFA, customer, and third-party audits, including findings, corrective actions, regulatory inquiries, and documentation requests.
- Ensure laboratory and quality activities comply with GMPs, HACCP, SQF, FSMA, SOPs, SSOPs, and company food safety requirements. Required Qualifications
- Food and/ Dairy manufacturing or similar lab leadership experience required.
- Experience with microbiological and quality testing in a food manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of GMPs, HACCP, SQF, FSMA, and food safety requirements.
- Experience with product holds, out-of-specification investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet testing and documentation deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-based quality systems. Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
- Experience with environmental monitoring, third-party laboratory coordination, data systems, and regulatory compliance.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in laboratory, production, and plant areas, generally ranging from 55-85°F.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and repetitive use of hands, fingers, and wrists; occasional lifting up to 45 pounds.
- Exposure to wet or slippery floors, Stairs, chemicals, production equipment, and other plant hazards; required PPE must be worn.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, or adjusted schedules as operational needs require.
