Job Description

Summary This position is responsible to set up and operate power shear machines to cut steel, aluminum, and other materials to specified dimensions and angles Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate hydraulic power shear to cut a variety of metal materials.
  • Perform in-process and final quality checks using precision measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, micrometers) to confirm parts meet specified tolerances.
  • Adjust machine settings including blade gap, rake angle, and back-gauge as necessary.
  • Monitor machine performance and report any operational concerns or maintenance needs to the Shop Foreman—repairs are not performed by the operator.
  • Program and modify machine parameters for standard and complex custom part requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications to ensure accurate layout and cutting.
  • Layout parts and make program adjustments independently, even without provided drawings, as needed for complex or custom jobs.
  • Maintain daily equipment checks and report any issues promptly.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and report potential hazards immediately.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records by pulling materials, documenting usage, updating tags, and logging data in QuickBase.
  • Ensure inventory racks are organized, tagged properly, and free from hazards, maintaining a safe working environment for everyone working within the building (e.g., unsecured or overhanging materials).
  • Work within assigned fabrication area unless otherwise directed by the Shop Foreman.
  • Support other departments or tasks as requested by the Shop Foreman. Required Competencies
  • Strong mathematical skills, particularly in reading and applying dimensions.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to program and operate CNC equipment and maintain data in QuickBase.
  • Excellent attention to detail and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Solid understanding of blueprint reading and metal layout techniques (nesting for efficient material usage).
Work Environment This role is based in a fast-paced fabrication shop. Operators are exposed to machinery, shop noise, and occasional airborne particles. Steel-toe boots are required on-site; all other PPE is provided. Physical Requirements Must be able to stand for extended periods. Regularly required to lift and move metal sheets or components up to 75 lbs. Frequent bending, reaching, and handling of tools and materials. Position Type and Schedule Full-time, hourly Regular schedule: Monday
  • Thursday, 5:00 AM
  • 3:30 PM (with an unpaid 30 minute lunch break). Overtime on Fridays, 5:00 AM
  • 11:00 AM.
Education and Experience Requirements Minimum 3 years of experience operating hydraulic shear equipment in a fabrication environment. Proficiency in machine programming required. Prior experience in architectural metal fabrication strongly preferred. Other Duties This job description outlines the core responsibilities of the position but is not an exhaustive list.
