The Quality Assurance Specialist maintains an active Quality presence on the production floor to ensure that raw materials, intermediates, finished products, and distributed products meet established food safety and quality requirements. This position performs and documents GMP, Critical Control Point (CCP), in-process, labeling, storage, and other required production checks in accordance with company procedures and applicable FDA requirements under 21 CFR Parts 111 and 117. The position follows the production schedule; when production is not operating and required checks are completed this position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager for task assignments.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Maintains an active Quality Assurance presence on the production floor and completes required GMP, food safety, and Critical Control Point (CCP) monitoring during production. Verifies production readiness and compliance by reviewing cleaning records, line clearances, equipment usage logs, production placards, processing dates, and real-time documentation. Performs and documents required in-process checks and sampling, including moisture, water activity, pH, temperatures, weights, scale verification, metal detector performance, packaging integrity, seals, and product labeling. Verifies that equipment and utensils are clean, properly maintained, calibrated where applicable, and free from conditions that could cause contamination or product adulteration. Monitors employee hygiene, gowning, PPE use, and other personnel practices for compliance with GMP requirements. Verifies that materials and products are accurately labeled, traceable, appropriately identified by status and disposition, and properly protected, controlled, stored, and segregated throughout the product lifecycle. Conducts facility GMP walkthroughs to evaluate handwashing facilities, chemical and cleaning-tool storage, waste handling, warehouse conditions, pest or contamination risks, temperature-controlled storage, and general facility conditions. Reviews production and facility records for compliance with Good Documentation Practices, including legibility, real-time entries, proper corrections, completion of blank fields, and use of approved forms. Documents and classifies observed deficiencies promptly escalates critical food safety or quality concerns, and submits completed records for Quality Assurance review and corrective-action follow-up. Completes end-of-shift and end-of-production verifications, including final production-area walkthroughs, batch-record review, finished-pallet status checks, inventory reconciliation, and documentation of production anomalies. Safely performs routine inspections, measurements, sampling, and documentation in production, warehouse, refrigerated, and storage areas; visually distinguish product information and color-coded status controls; hear alarms and verbal communications; wear required PPE; work around food ingredients, chemicals, dust, odors, noise, moving equipment and varying environmental conditions; and follow the production schedule, including occasional extended hours. Weekends, or schedule changes.
Education & Experience:
Associate's degree in food science, nutrition, food safety, or a related field preferred but not required. Minimum of 1 year experience in Quality Assurance, preferably within dietary supplements, functional ingredients, or food/beverage industries.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work primarily in production, warehouse, and other operational areas of a food manufacturing facility. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently move between operational locations. Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, reach and work around production equipment while conducting investigations. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds as needed.
