Position Summary seeking a Materials Engineer I to provide laboratory and analytical support for scientists and engineers involved in the research, development, and manufacturing of glass materials. This role combines hands-on laboratory work with scientific analysis, focusing on devitrification testing, liquidus testing, optical microscopy, and materials characterization. During the first three months, the selected candidate will focus exclusively on liquidus and devitrification testing to develop proficiency before expanding into additional analytical and project support activities. This position is ideal for recent graduates or candidates with up to three years of experience who enjoy laboratory work and detailed scientific analysis. Key Responsibilities Perform analysis and imaging of prepared samples using optical microscopy techniques, including stereomicroscopy and polarized light microscopy. Conduct petrographic analysis by identifying crystalline phases in glass materials, performing measurements, and documenting observations. Prepare glass and refractory samples through cutting, mounting, epoxying, grinding, and polishing.
Operate and perform analysis using:
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Support standard liquidus and devitrification testing, including: Gradient Strip Testing Isothermal Testing CGR Sample Testing Compile analytical data and prepare technical reports for geologists and engineering teams. Manage laboratory sample workflow using internal work request and tracking systems. Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and overall laboratory organization. Ensure high-quality, accurate, and timely completion of assigned laboratory work. Follow established laboratory procedures and safety protocols. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Geology, Materials Science, or a related scientific discipline. 0-3 years of laboratory or materials characterization experience. Strong interest in laboratory-based scientific work. Ability to work independently while following established procedures. Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking. Comfortable spending most of the workday using optical microscopes. Ability to lift 10-25 lbs. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel. Preferred Qualifications Hands-on experience with Optical Microscopy (highly preferred).
Experience with:
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Electron Microprobe ICP-MS or similar analytical instruments Sample preparation experience, including mounting, epoxying, grinding, and polishing. Knowledge of glass materials and refractory materials. "TA01"
