Full Job Description Overview:
Working as a member of the Mechanical Inspection Department (MID), Field Inspector, Mechanical is responsible for the inspection of the assigned railroad and private freight car maintenance facilities for compliance with AAR and FRA requirements, including AAR Interchange Rules; AAR Manual of Standards & Recommended Practices; directives from AAR Committees; Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Railroad Freight Car Safety Standards; FRA Power Brakes and Drawbar Laws; and FRA Safety Appliance Standards.
Primary Responsibilities:
AAR M-1003
Quality Assurance Facility Audits. Mechanical Repair Inspections. Technical Facility Inspections. Product Testing Observations. Participate in Joint Audits of
AAR M-1002
Tank Car Facilities. Extensive travel is required to execute responsibilities. Ensures that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Open to learning and living the MxV Rail values (Momentum, Insight, Teamwork, Rigor, Purpose) in all facets of the organization's work. Experience in freight car repair and car shop operations with demonstratable knowledge in applicable AAR rules and standards. Effective and positive communication skills (verbal & written). Fully committed to safety, customer satisfaction and continuous quality improvement. A self-motivated individual, with demonstrated ability to manage workload with minimal direct supervision. Demonstrable computer skills, with experience using Microsoft® Office products, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Candidate must be able to perform process and product audits of facilities following AAR procedures. Requires the ability to read and interpret data. Willing to travel extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and potentially other international destinations. Incumbent must attain AAR Quality Assurance accreditation within six months and perform Quality Assurance Audits under AAR Specification M-1003, Section J. Maintaining a valid driver's license is required. MxV Rail policy requires all prospective employees to complete a criminal background check (Disclosure for Consumer Reports Consent Form) and a pre-employment substance abuse screening (Applicant Consent for Drug Testing Form) as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the above minimum qualifications, the following qualifications are preferred. Working knowledge/experience of wheel and bearing facilities. Freight car repair/inspection credentials and a minimum of seven years of experience in the inspection/repair of freight cars. Supervisory experience as a foreman or plant manager.

Quality Assurance auditing training or experience. An associate or bachelor's degree in a technical or management field.

Office and field environments. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors year-round. Work may require standing and/or walking for long periods. Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, and walk in an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces such as ballast.
Vision:
See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents.
Hearing:
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Extensive Travel:
Required to meet customer requirements (40 to 43 weeks per year).
