Job Description

Coatings Inspector (AMPP / NACE CIP Level 1 Minimum) Granite Peak Fabrication builds ASME Code pressure vessels, TES tanks, and process skids for oil and gas, data center, geothermal, power generation, industrial water, and aerospace/defense customers. We deliver superior quality on time at a competitive price, and we're growing fast. We are seeking a certified Coatings Inspector for our Casper, Wyoming shop. The Coatings Inspector is a Quality Control position that verifies surface prep and protective coating work on vessels, tanks, and skids meets the customer specification, the manufacturer's
PDS, AMPP/NACE/SSPC
standards, and GPF quality standards across every market we serve. Reports to the Director of Quality Control.
AMPP CIP
Level 1 (formerly NACE) is the minimum to be considered; pay is scaled by certification level as shown below.

  • REQUIRED.
    Level 2 or Level 3 preferred and compensated at a higher rate. 3+ years of hands-on experience in industrial protective coatings
  • inspection, application, or a combination
  • in a shop or field environment. Experience in a large production output setting
  • a high-volume fabrication or coating shop with multiple vessels/skids moving through blast and paint at the same time
  • and the ability to keep inspections on pace with production without letting quality slip.
Must be physically able to fit through and work inside 14" x 18" manways to perform internal coating inspections on vessels. This is a firm requirement of the position. Must be available to come in on weekends and work late or early as required to meet production schedules and customer ship dates. Working knowledge of AMPP/NACE and SSPC surface preparation and coating standards (SSPC-SP 1, SP 6, SP 10, SP 5, SSPC-PA 2, NACE No. 2/3, etc.).
Proficient with coating inspection instruments:
surface profile (replica tape/depth micrometer), DFT gauges (Type 1 and Type 2), WFT gauges, psychrometer/dew point meter, surface thermometer, low
  • and high-voltage holiday detectors, adhesion testers, and soluble-salt test kits. Ability to read and interpret customer coating specifications, Product Data Sheets, fabrication drawings, and job travelers. Computer skills
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Bluebeam, and internal document-control software.
Professional written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly document findings and hold coating crews to the specification. Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around blast and paint operations with appropriate PPE and respiratory protection. Ability to lift 50 lbs and to climb, bend, and crawl as needed to access inspection points. Goal oriented with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, and at times, stressful environment.
Job Responsibilities:
Coating Inspection & Testing Review the customer coating specification, PDS, and job traveler at kick-off and confirm the coating system, surface prep grade, DFT targets, and environmental limits with the Paint Manager and Crew Lead before work begins. Record ambient conditions (air/surface temperature, relative humidity, dew point) prior to and during blast and application; stop work when conditions fall outside PDS tolerances. Inspect surface preparation for cleanliness, profile depth, and soluble-salt contamination against the specified
SSPC/NACE
standard. Verify coating material batch numbers, shelf life, mix ratios, induction times, and pot life; confirm thinning is within PDS limits. Measure and document WFT during application and DFT per
SSPC-PA 2
after each coat; verify recoat windows are met. Enter vessels through manways to perform internal lining inspections

Perform holiday detection, adhesion testing, and visual inspection for runs, sags, dry spray, pinholes, and holidays; identify defects and require repair before release. Perform final coating inspection prior to shipment and release only when the product fully meets specification and GPF standards. Documentation & Reporting Complete daily coating inspection reports, blast and paint travelers, and Inspection Test Plan (ITP) hold points; file all records in the job quality package digitally or as live documents. Maintain calibration records for all coating inspection instruments and verify calibration before use. Document non-conformances, assist in root-cause analysis, and track corrective actions to closure with the Paint Manager. Assemble the coating section of final customer data books (MRB/turnover packages). Coordination & Communication Serve as GPF's point of contact for customer and third-party coating inspectors; schedule and attend witness and hold-point inspections. Communicate inspection results, spec clarifications, and quality concerns promptly to the Paint Manager, Crew Lead, Project Management, and QC leadership. Support the QC department on other inspection duties (fit-up, dimensional, final shipment walkthroughs) as workload requires. Teamwork is the key to success. Safety Follow all GPF safety procedures, including PPE, respiratory protection, and confined-space entry requirements; stop unsafe work immediately. Pay Scale by
Certification Level:
Pay is set within the band for the
AMPP/NACE CIP
level held at hire, based on experience and skills. An Inspector who earns the next CIP level while employed at GPF moves to that band. Professional development assistance is available toward CIP Level 2 and Level 3 training and exams.

  • Senior Certified Coatings Inspector $44.00
  • $48.
00 Senior technical authority on coatings; resolves spec disputes; trains crew and lower-level inspectors. Level 1 is the minimum certification to be considered. Candidates holding an SSPC Protective Coatings Inspector (PCI) certification will be evaluated for the equivalent band.
Experience:
Previous coating inspection experience on ASME pressure vessels, process skids, or structural steel preferred. Experience in a large production output setting

Familiarity with internal linings (epoxy/phenolic tank linings) and external oil & gas coating systems preferred. Knowledge of airless and plural-component spray application.
