THE OPPORTUNITY

We're seeking a Stationary Engineer for the operation, maintenance, and repair of base building and laboratory systems within a bioscience research facility. This role supports critical laboratory and clinical environments requiring reliable uptime, regulatory compliance, and precise environmental control. This position offers a clear path for professional growth and advancement within engineering operations. MUST have HVAC and Refrigeration experience.

POSITION

Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6:30pm shift, Local 39 Stationary Engineer position (Journeyperson) in San Francisco.

PRIMARY REPORTING

Chief Engineer

JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO

Operate, monitor, and maintain HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems supporting bioscience laboratories and clinical spaces. Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on building equipment and mission-critical laboratory infrastructure. Support lab systems including fume hoods, exhaust, vacuum, compressed air, and DI/RO water. Monitor and respond to Building Automation System (BAS/BMS) alarms, trends, and environmental conditions for research spaces and Cold rooms. Maintain electrical distribution systems, generators, and life safety equipment. Complete logs, reports, and ensure compliance with safety and authority having jurisdiction and regulatory standards. Coordinate with vendors, tenants, researchers, and internal teams as needed. Perform duties in accordance with IUOE Local 39 jurisdiction and standards.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 5-years journey-level experience in commercial, healthcare, laboratory, or bioscience facility operations. Strong knowledge of HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Experience with BAS/BMS platforms and critical environment controls. Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and work independently. Effective communication and organizational skills in an active research environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs. AutoCAD and AI experience are a plus.

CERTIFICATIONS

EPA Universal Certification (required) Fire Pump and UST certifications (preferred) or will be required to obtain in first year of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

24/7 operation; swing shift, weekends, and holidays as needed. Working in mechanical rooms, rooftops, laboratories, and active clinical research environments.
