• Job Description
• The Stationary Engineer plays a key role in ensuring safe, reliable operation of high-pressure boilers and building mechanical and utility systems in a hospital environment.

This role involves operating and maintaining steam-generating equipment, mechanical and electrical distribution systems, and emergency power plants, while supporting fire and safety compliance and preventive maintenance programs. The position requires journeyman-level technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently on a night or swing shift schedule.

• Responsibilities
• + Operate and maintain high-pressure, steam-generating boilers in accordance with manufacturer-recommended procedures and applicable codes.

+ Inspect, operate, and maintain mechanical and electrical distribution systems, performing major repairs when required.

+ Participate actively in preventive maintenance programs for all mechanical and electrical distribution systems.

+ Monitor and remain constantly aware of piping systems, inspecting oxygen, gas, steam, and water pipelines and performing journeyman-level repairs and fabrications as needed.

+ Conduct preventive maintenance and periodic test runs of emergency generating plants to ensure reliable operation during emergencies, strictly following established schedules.

+ Maintain accurate records and information related to work assignments, including materials, labor, and cost tracking.

+ Assess equipment condition to determine whether repair or replacement is necessary and prioritize the schedule of repairs accordingly.

+ Consistently perform checks on fire and safety equipment and maintain required fire and safety code records, ensuring they are current and available to authorized individuals or agencies.

+ Install, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, and fixtures within the hospital in compliance with applicable building codes.

+ Assist with major and minor utility shutdowns requested by various departments, outside contractors, and internal teams, ensuring safe and coordinated execution.

+ Carry out all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the hospital's service and care standards.

+ Perform HVAC-related tasks, including maintenance and troubleshooting of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

+ Perform electrical maintenance and troubleshooting, including work on industrial electricity and three-phase motors.

+ Perform plumbing maintenance, repairs, and related troubleshooting activities.

+ Support general facility and building maintenance, including carpentry and other trade-related tasks as needed.

+ Respond to maintenance requests in a fast-paced hospital environment and collaborate closely with healthcare engineers and other trade specialists.

+ Use standard tools, instruments, and equipment safely and effectively to complete maintenance and repair tasks.

+ Plan, organize, and prioritize daily workload to meet deadlines and operational requirements.

+ Communicate clearly and professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization to coordinate work and resolve issues.

+ Adhere to local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to building systems, safety, and maintenance activities.

+ Follow infection control guidelines in all maintenance and repair work to support a safe healthcare environment.

• Essential Skills
• + High school diploma or GED equivalent.

+ Five (5) years of directly related work experience in maintenance, stationary engineering, or a similar discipline.

+ Current, valid California Driver's License (CDL).

+ Extensive knowledge of industrial electricity and three-phase motors.

+ Proficiency in operating standard tools, instruments, and equipment used in building and mechanical maintenance.

+ Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work independently while meeting deadlines.

+ Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify effective solutions.

+ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization, with strong command of the English language.

+ Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing conditions and priorities.

+ Ability to collaborate and work well with a diverse maintenance team, including electricians, HVAC technicians, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, and general maintenance staff.

+ Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and documentation.

+ Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to building systems, safety, and maintenance.

+ Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, including adherence to infection control guidelines.

+ Hands-on experience with boiler operation and maintenance.

+ Experience with fire safety systems and fire and safety equipment checks.

+ Experience with equipment maintenance across mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems.

+ Demonstrated ability to perform preventive maintenance on facility and building systems.

• Additional Skills & Qualifications
• + Preferred license or certification in one or more construction or building trades or disciplines.

+ Preferred background in hospital or industrial maintenance environments.

+ Experience with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting and repair.

+ Experience with electrical maintenance and troubleshooting in facilities settings.

+ Experience with plumbing systems, including repair and maintenance.

+ Experience in general building maintenance and carpentry.

+ Experience working with boilers, chillers, and related mechanical equipment.

+ Experience as a stationary engineer, maintenance technician, or in facility maintenance roles.

+ Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and facility maintenance planning.

+ Ability to support building maintenance activities in a healthcare setting.

+ Comfort working night or swing shifts and adjusting to varying days off.

+ Ability to learn and follow hospital-specific standards and procedures.

• Work Environment
• This position is based onsite at a hospital facility and involves working closely with a multidisciplinary maintenance team that includes electricians, HVAC technicians, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, and general maintenance personnel.

The environment is fast-paced and highly focused on safety, reliability, and infection control. The Stationary Engineer works alongside healthcare engineers to respond to maintenance requests and support critical building systems. Initial training is conducted on a day shift from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for about two months. The primary working schedule is a night shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., with occasional swing shift assignments from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., provided with at least one week's notice. Regular days off are Tuesday and Wednesday on the night schedule, while days off on swing shift may vary (such as Friday and Saturday or Sunday and Monday). Work is performed in mechanical rooms, utility areas, and throughout the hospital, with exposure to boilers, chillers, piping systems, and other building infrastructure. • Pay and Benefits
• The pay range for this position is $48.

42 - $65.90/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
