Tool & Die Maker Job Description The Tool & Die Maker constructs, maintains, and repairs new and existing tooling and dies used in a roll forming manufacturing environment. This role interprets blueprints and CAD design schematics, designs jigs and templates, and sets up and operates a variety of metalworking machines to fabricate high-precision components. The position requires hands-on work in the tool room, close collaboration with engineering, and meticulous inspection of finished tools and dies to ensure accuracy, quality, and reliable production performance. Responsibilities Construct and maintain new and existing tooling and dies to support production needs. Read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and design schematics to plan tooling and die work. Design jigs and templates as work aids for the fabrication of parts and roll forming operations. Measure and mark metal stock for machining according to specified dimensions and tolerances. Set up machine tools such as drills, presses, lathes, grinders, and milling machines for tooling and die work. Cut and shape metal blocks and components to precise dimensions using appropriate metalworking equipment. Fit and assemble tools and die parts, ensuring proper alignment, function, and durability. Inspect finished dies and tools for defects, smoothness, contour accuracy, and overall quality. Perform test runs with completed tools and dies to verify performance and make necessary adjustments. Repair or replace defective parts in tools and dies to restore proper function. Fabricate parts and components for tooling, dies, and related equipment using metalworking tools. Work with roll forming or rolled alloys, including aluminum and metal coil, in tooling and die fabrication. Utilize precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gages to verify dimensions and tolerances. Conduct first article inspections to ensure new or modified tooling meets specifications. Follow directions from engineering leadership to implement design changes and continuous improvements in tooling. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe tool room and work area while operating equipment responsibly. Essential Skills Proficiency in constructing and maintaining tooling and dies for manufacturing applications. Hands-on experience with tool and die work, including die repair and die maintenance. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, and design schematics. Experience using CAD and AutoCAD software for tooling and jig design. Skill in designing jigs and templates as work aids for part fabrication. Strong ability to set up and operate metalworking tools, including drills, lathes, grinders, milling machines, and presses. Demonstrated capability in cutting and shaping metal blocks to specified dimensions. Proficiency in fitting and assembling tools and die parts to achieve precise alignment and function. Experience inspecting finished dies and tools for defects, smoothness, and contour deformities. Ability to perform test runs with completed tools and dies and adjust as needed. Experience working with roll forming or rolled alloys, including aluminum and metal coil. Proficiency in the fabrication of metal parts for tooling and dies. Strong skill using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and various types of gages. Experience performing first article inspection to verify conformance to specifications. Capability to repair or replace defective tooling and die components. Vocational or technical degree in a similar field or equivalent technical training in tool and die or related disciplines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in roll forming environments or working with multiple roll forming machines. Experience with coil bending processes and related tooling requirements. Familiarity with aluminum and other metal alloys used in roll forming and fabrication. Comfort working closely with engineering teams and following detailed technical instructions. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise tooling. Effective problem-solving skills for diagnosing tooling issues and implementing corrective actions. Work Environment This role is based in a manufacturing facility in North Gardena that specializes in roll forming, with over 40 roll forming machines and coil bending operations. You will work primarily in the tool room in a hands-on capacity, constructing and maintaining tooling and dies that support production. The position follows a first-shift schedule, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., aligned with an 8-hour shift structure. The environment involves regular use of metalworking tools such as drills, milling machines, grinders, presses, and lathes, as well as precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, and gages. You will work around aluminum and metal coil materials and collaborate closely with engineering leadership in an active manufacturing setting. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Gardena, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $40.00/hr.
