Job Description

Job description: Build Tools That Build the Future Midstate Spring has been crafting high-precision springs in Syracuse, NY since 1939 — and we're still going strong. In our Tool Room, we don't just fix things — we craft the custom tools and dies that power our entire production floor. If you have machining experience, love working with your hands, and take pride in making things the right way, this is where you can take your skills to the next level. We're looking for sharp minds and steady hands — whether you're an experienced toolmaker or an aspiring machinist eager to grow. We're looking for people who are mechanically sharp, eager to learn, and ready to join a team that takes craftsmanship seriously. This role is open to machinists at all experience levels. We provide training and mentorship for the right candidate.
What You'll Do:
Sharpen and rework die sections, punches, and cut-off tools with precision Fabricate or repair custom tooling and fixtures for our springmaking operations Use a wide range of machines: mills, grinders, lathes, band saws, CNC equipment Interpret blueprints and part drawings for complex tooling components Measure with precision using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and comparators Work with tool steels like O-1, A-2, and D-2 — and apply proper heat treatment Torch work, welding, and hands-on problem-solving when things don't go as planned Collaborate with engineers, production leads, and fellow tradespeople
What We're Looking For:
1+ years of experience in a manufacturing, machining, or tool room environment Confidence with machine tools — whether manual or CNC Comfortable using precision measuring instruments and basic shop math Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings Experience with or interest in tool steels and heat treatment processes You love working with your hands, and you care about doing quality work Team-first attitude — but able to work independently with minimal supervision Nice to Have (but not required): Formal machinist or toolmaking training CNC programming or setup experience Die making or stamping tooling experience Military or vocational background in mechanics or fabrication
What We Offer:
Hands-on training, mentorship, and a real career path Fully climate-controlled facility (no sweating or freezing on the job) Health, dental, and life insurance (available 1st of the month after hire) 401(k) with match (eligibility after 6 months) Paid time off awarded upon hire and every quarter A respectful, skilled, and supportive team Why Midstate Spring?
