About Us Founded in 1953, Northland Plastics is a third-generation, family-owned industry leader in custom plastic profile extrusions. Because we design and build all of our custom extrusion dies, vacuum calibration tools, and fabrication fixtures in-house, our toolroom is the heart of our quick-turn, high-quality operations. We are looking for an inquisitive, detail-oriented Machinist to join our team and help us build the high-precision tools that keep our production lines moving. Position Overview In this role, you won't just be running repetitive production cycles. You will act as a key collaborator in our toolroom, fabricating custom, low-volume tooling—including extrusion dies, sizing/vacuum calibration equipment, and downstream fixtures and equipment. You will bridge the gap between engineering drawings and physical material, using both CNC and manual machines to bring custom profiles to life.

Key Responsibilities Machining & Setup:

Setup, program (at the machine/controller), and operate CNC machining centers and manual toolroom equipment (mills, lathes, grinders). Experience with Wire EDM is a major plus.

Blueprint Interpretation:

Read and interpret complex engineering prints, 2D/3D CAD models, and technical layouts to determine the most efficient sequence of machining operations.

Quality & Precision:

Maintain tight tolerances (often to inch or tighter) required for plastic extrusion dies. Monitor machine performance and make real-time adjustments.

Inspection:

Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators) to inspect completed work against specifications.

Collaboration:

Work closely with our design engineers, toolmakers, and team leaders to troubleshoot tooling issues and continuously improve manufacturing efficiency.

Job Requirements Experience:

Minimum of 1 year of hands-on machining experience in a toolroom/job shop environment OR equivalent technical degree/education.

Technical Skills:

Proficient in setting up and operating manual and CNC machines. Strong blueprint reading skills. Solid math skills, including geometry and the ability to perform metric-to-standard conversions. Software (Preferred): Experience with AutoCAD or CAM software is preferred but not required.

Soft Skills:

A natural problem-solver who is inquisitive, self-motivated, and capable of working both independently and closely with a tight-knit team.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
