The Water Plant Operator is responsible for participating in the operation of the water treatment plant. Incumbents in this position may be designated as "Class III Operator", "Class II Operator", or "Class I Operator."
Duties:
Monitors and adjusts the distribution system to meet demands; inspects plant grounds, checks gauges, takes readings, monitors flow levels, pumps, motors and valves. Takes samples and tests chemical levels throughout the plant on an hourly basis; performs a series of daily laboratory analyses. Maintains the effectiveness of water filters by inspecting and cleaning as needed. Adheres to all Authority, county, state, and EPA policies in regard to water treatment processes. Adjusts chemical feeders as needed. Monitors flow throughout the plant to ensure water quality. Assists in building and ground maintenance, including troubleshooting equipment, making repairs, and installing new equipment. Aids in accomplishing departmental and company goals, including but not limited to, involvement in projects and preparation reports as needed. Maintains logbooks and computer files containing laboratory analysis results, distribution system changes, filter backwash readings, process control changes, chemical inventory, and other pertinent information; documents all problems or complaints. Monitors watershed by taking on-site readings of streams and ponds. Attends job related training; remains current on revisions to pertinent policies, procedures, rules, regulations, requirements and standards. Required to be on-call. May be required to work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Water and Sewerage Authority standards and practices. Working experience and knowledge of SCADA systems. Knowledge of the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and related sciences as they pertain to water/wastewater treatment and environmental science. Knowledge of principles of mathematics and statistics used for laboratory and field calculations. Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and safety. Knowledge of appropriate use, care, and maintenance of various equipment. Knowledge and understanding of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules, and regulations. Ability to learn the procedures and materials used in chemical, biochemical, bacteriological, physical, and instrumental analyses of water and wastewater. Ability to analyze testing data and draw sound conclusions. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare complete and concise reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Thorough understanding of contracts, plans, specifications, and regulations. Ability to remain flexible and efficient in a fast-paced environment. Ability to effectively multitask while analyzing and solving problems. Ability to make intelligent and quick decisions, working well under pressure, and when faced with unexpected occurrences or delays. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction, and must be able to improve performance through management feedback.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent Possession or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, including but not limited to a Class A CDL. Possession of, with the ability to maintain, a Georgia Class III Water Operator License. A Class III certification in water treatment is the minimum level for assuming this role. If not in possession of the Class II Certification level upon assuming the role, the incumbent must obtain a Class II license as soon as reasonably possible, but no longer than a period of two years. Possession of, with the ability to maintain, a Georgia Water Laboratory Analyst Certification.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed within an office setting, warehouse setting, laboratory setting, and within the field, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of the job site in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching. The employee must occasionally lift and be able to move objects of up to fifty pounds; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, in various environmental conditions. Pay:
From $21.00 per hour Expected hours: 36.0 - 48.0 per week
