Director of Sanitation Job Summary The Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily cleaning and sanitizing operations of the facility to ensure compliance with company, city, state, and federal food safety regulations. This position leads a team of sanitation and janitorial technicians, implements Sanitary Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), manages chemical inventory, and maintains Master Sanitation Schedules (MSS) to guarantee a safe, hygienic, and tour/audit-ready facility. Key Responsibilities & Duties Operational Leadership & Supervision (40%) Directly supervise, train, and coach sanitation staff on cleaning procedures, chemical safety, and equipment operation. Ensure all production equipment, tools, and facilities are disassembled, cleaned, sanitized, and reassembled according to established SSOPs. Update and track the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) to ensure all areas are covered. Provides direction for all 4 sanitation teams to make sure they are completing MSS tasks, line cleanings, red tags, outside grounds cleaning and supporting plant startups. Responsible for providing clear communication to the teams over the weekend to ensure all lines start up on time. Responsible for managing employee time/attendance in ADP and Jetson, ensuring staffing for the team is accurate and issuing employee discipline when appropriate and timely. Responsible for scheduling meetings on a quarterly basis with the sanitation leads to communicate department/business information. Responsible for providing a bi-weekly work schedule for the teams that includes line cleaning. Responsible for ensuring sanitation equipment is operational for the team to use. Responsible for ensuring the sanitation team receives training in cleaning all new equipment in the facility. 2. Food Safety & Compliance (30%) Enforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and ensure adherence to SQF daily. Responsible for performing daily chemical concentration checks for sanitizer. Responsible for maintaining all sanitation employee training records for auditing purposes. Responsible for completing sanitation corrective actions in Red Zone timely and/or audit findings. 3. Safety, Chemical & Vendor Management (15%) Ensure all staff follow safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, and chemical handling procedures correctly. Responsible for ordering chemicals for sanitation, CIP, R&D, janitorial Responsible for interfacing with vendors that provide services to the plant. Maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals. 4. Documentation & Reporting (15%) Updating and reviewing sanitation logs and records for accuracy and compliance weekly. Assist in preparing for third-party audits and regulatory inspections (City, State and Federal). Work with maintenance to get work scheduled for weekend deep cleaning. Ensuring that all new equipment installed has cleaning procedures written for the plant.
Required Qualifications & Skills Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree in food science, Microbiology, or related field preferred.
Experience:
3-5 years of experience in a food production environment, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory role.
Knowledge:
Strong understanding of HACCP, SSOPs, GMPs, and SQF principles.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Sanitation 7-Steps of Cleaning, Knowledge of CIP (Clean-in-Place), and COP (Clean-out-of-Place) systems.
Leadership:
Servant leadership is required for this role. Strong communication skills, ability to train, coach, hold people accountable and build a cohesive team.
Physical:
Ability to stand/walk for long periods, work in cold/wet environments, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Flexibility:
