Job Description

Position Summary Under supervision of the Wastewater Supervisor, this position is training for the responsibility of the operation and maintenance of the City Wastewater Treatment Plant and the City Wastewater Collection System, including the outlying lift stations. Essential Functions Include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity. 1. Checks, monitors and lubricates operating equipment and performs maintenance as required at the Wastewater Treatment Plant 2. Collects samples of wastewater and sludge and performs standard tests to evaluate the treatment process and maintains related records 3. Operates the Wastewater Plant including making decisions regarding aeration rates, sludge hauling and wasting rates 4. Loads and transports sludge to agricultural locations and then land-applies the sludge 5. Performs daily inspections and preventive equipment maintenance at the outlying lift stations 6. Operates trucks, rodding and water jetting machines and other transportation equipment in the maintenance of the City Wastewater Collection System 7. Assists in constructing and repairing sewer lines and appurtenances 8. Locates and marks underground sewer lines for other excavators 9. Provides stand-by on weekends and holidays 10. Assists with supply inventory, filing and record-keeping 11. Performs routine custodial and building maintenance tasks such as painting, scraping, washing, mowing grass, pulling weeds and shoveling snow 12. Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances 13. Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary 14. Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures 15. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed 16. Position Requirements:

1. High school diploma or other equivalent 2. Public utility maintenance preferred Certifications /

Licenses:

1. Ability to obtain a State of Kansas Class I Wastewater Operator Certification within two years of hire 2. Abiilty to obtain a Kansas Commercial Driver's License within thirty days of hire

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

1. Ability to utilize power tools and equipment needed 2. Ability to recognize machinery malfunctions, assemble and install sewer lines and their appurtenances needed 3. Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work 4. Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently 5. Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner 6. Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment 7. Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously 8. Strong written and verbal communication skills 9. Problem solving and critical thinking skills 10. Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities 11. Ability to communicate in a professional, calm and courteous manner with the general public and employees 12.
