Job Description
Performs difficult skilled technical work planning, directing, scheduling, supervising and participating in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment facilities, ensuring compliance with Federal and State rules and regulations, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Assistant Public Utility Director. Continuous supervision is exercised over Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator and Water Treatment Plant Operator. Supervises and participates in the work of subordinates, engages in plant operations and process control, laboratory analysis and preventative maintenance and repair of plant equipment and facilities. Establishes, maintains, completes, and analyzes as a variety of reports. Serves as Operator in Responsible Charge, ensuring that the plant meets its permit requirements. Reviews laboratory reports for operational performance of the plant and oversees changes in the chemical and biological processes of the plant. Establishes, trains, and ensures proper safety policies and procedures. Requests necessary resources for plant operations as part of the annual budget process. Performs other assigned duties. Thorough knowledge of modern water treatment plant principles and operating practices. Thorough knowledge of the hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles pertinent to treatment plant operations. Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements of the work. Ability to effectively plan and supervise the work of others. Ability to keep records and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with regulating agency representatives and associates. High school diploma or equivalent. Eight to ten (8-10) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Possession of NC A-Well Water Treatment Plant Operator, Physical/Chemical Wastewater Operator, Process Control Chemistry, Certified Laboratory, and Bacteriological certifications upon hire. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
