Job Description

About the Role The Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Operator Trainee, I, II, or IV performs operational, laboratory, and maintenance functions associated with the treatment of potable water. Working as part of the Water Treatment Division, this role is responsible for monitoring treatment processes, collecting and analyzing samples, operating and adjusting treatment equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and maintaining records to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and the safe delivery of drinking water to the community. Depending on certification level and experience, the WTP Operator monitors plant operations through visual inspections, equipment readings, and laboratory testing, making adjustments to treatment processes as needed. The position also assists with facility maintenance, equipment repairs, inventory management, and recordkeeping activities. Work is performed on an assigned or rotating shift and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions and operational hazards associated with water treatment facilities.
  • Monitor water treatment processes through routine inspections of plant equipment and facilities
  • Make regular tours of the plant and inspect pumps, motors, generators, filters, clarifiers, chlorination systems, and related equipment for proper operation
  • Record and maintain operational data from meters, gauges, instruments, and control systems
  • Perform standard laboratory chemical and biological testing and document results
  • Collect water samples for process monitoring and regulatory compliance purposes
  • Regulate and adjust pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and other treatment equipment to maintain optimal operating conditions
  • Perform preventative maintenance and assist with major equipment repairs and maintenance projects
  • Perform routine facility maintenance, including cleaning and painting of buildings and equipment
  • Order parts, materials, and supplies through established purchasing procedures
  • Maintain accurate operational, laboratory, and maintenance records
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations
  • Perform other related duties as required Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Must obtain a North Carolina Grade C Water Operator Certification within one (1) year of hire Water Treatment Plant Operator I
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water treatment facility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • North Carolina Grade C Water Operator Certification required Water Treatment Plant Operator II
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) to six (6) years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • North Carolina Grade B Water Operator Certification required Water Treatment Plant Operator IV
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) to eight (8) years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • North Carolina Grade A Water Operator Certification required
