Positions Available (Salaries Vary on Position) Water Treatment Plant Operator Apprentice Water Treatment Plant Operator Senior Water Treatment Plant Operator Position Overview Water Treatment Plant Operations employees perform progressively responsible work involving the treatment, pumping, monitoring, testing, and control of drinking water. Depending upon assignment, experience, licensing, and level of responsibility, employees may operate and monitor treatment processes, regulate flows and pressures, adjust chemical treatment systems, inspect equipment, collect and test water samples, maintain operational records, perform routine maintenance and repairs, respond to equipment or process conditions, and coordinate or lead the work of other plant personnel. Employees are expected to become familiar with the location, function, and operation of plant equipment and treatment processes and to understand how individual systems interact to maintain water quality, quantity, pressure, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities Responsibilities may include:

Operates, monitors, and adjusts water treatment plant equipment and treatment processes. Operates pumps, valves, motors, filters, chemical feed systems, instrumentation, and related equipment. Monitors plant conditions, flow rates, pressures, water levels, and treatment performance. Adds and regulates treatment chemicals in accordance with established procedures. Performs or assists with water sampling and routine water quality testing. Records operating data, treatment conditions, chemical usage, and other required information. Inspects equipment for proper operation and reports or responds to abnormal conditions. Performs or assists with routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs. Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Communicates plant conditions, operating changes, and problems encountered to appropriate staff. Uses computerized and manual systems to monitor operations and maintain records. Follows established safety, operating, and regulatory procedures. Participates in required training and continuing education. Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of or the ability to learn drinking water treatment processes and plant operations. Knowledge of or the ability to learn the operation of pumps, valves, motors, filters, chemical feed systems, instrumentation, and related equipment. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, operating procedures, safety requirements, and regulatory requirements. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations associated with chemical dosage, flow, treatment, and plant operations. Ability to accurately read gauges, meters, instrumentation, and computerized process information. Ability to recognize abnormal operating conditions and appropriately report or respond to them. Ability to collect samples and perform routine water quality testing. Ability to maintain complete and accurate operating records. Ability to perform repetitive work requiring careful attention and strict adherence to established procedures. Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform or assist with routine equipment maintenance. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, and other departments. Ability to use computerized and electronic operating and recordkeeping systems. Ability to work responsibly in an environment where reliable operations and public health are essential. Designed to provide qualified candidates with an opportunity to develop the knowledge, operational experience, training, and New Jersey water treatment licensing necessary for advancement within the profession. The apprenticeship program includes progressive training and licensing requirements established by the applicable New Jersey Civil Service job specification. 2.
